✈️ How to get there: Fly into Ushuaia, Argentina (the “End of the World”) — most Antarctica expedition cruises depart from here across the Drake Passage, altho we flew from Punta arenas, Chile
📅 Best time to visit Antarctica: November–March (Antarctic summer) — book 6-12 months ahead for the best cabin selection and pricing
🚢 What to look for in an Antarctica cruise: → Small-ship expeditions (under 200 guests) = more zodiac landings + better wildlife access → Look for IAATO-certified operators for responsible tourism → Ask about kayaking, camping, and polar plunge add-ons
🐧 What you’ll see: penguin colonies (gentoo, chinstrap, adelie), humpback whales, leopard seals, icebergs the size of buildings

👄 I’ve never been a chapstick or any lip balm wearer because I’ve just not needed any! This includes not wearing chapstick with spf in it. While we were in antarctica, it was VERY sunny and warm and we kayaked around 5-6 hours a day.

🥶 I think my lips were drying out or burnt a smidge and didn’t know it? I did the polar plunge and that night they became pretty painful so I put a bunch of chapstick on before bed.

⏰ I woke up at 6:50am (second photo) in extreme pain & turned my bedside lamp on & looked in my phone camera to see lips that looked BOTCHED!

🥼 we went to the doctor on board immediately who said she had never seen anything like this in her 40 years. She had seen bad burns, but not this bad! She gave me some antibacterial ointment and told me to keep putting that on throughout the day. By the afternoon they were already starting to go down.

🧫 when I got home, I saw my Dermatologist who did a swab on my lips to find some fungal infection. She suspects it was a mixture of sun poisoning and bacterial/fungal infection and the lips are very vascular so it was just not a good mix!

💦 so what I do it again? Absolutely! But I definitely would be wearing Chapstick with SPF! I also want to shout out that even the captain of the ship checked in on me. Everyone was so kind to make sure I was OK!

David and I have been dating since 2003 and he has been obsessed with penguins since before I knew him! Seeing him have a penguin walk up to him on our first day in antarctica is something I will never forget! I knew how happy he was 🥹🐧

And yes, that’s penguin poo on the penguins tummy please no judgment 😂
