Out with the old and in with the new!

Swapped out a Minn Kota Powerdrive this morning for a similar model with wireless remote capabilities and spotlock. Then to the outboard to give it a fresh prop.

🔧 Sometimes one repair leads you straight to the next problem.

This Mercury 115 2-stroke came into Cumberland Marine with multiple issues.

We replaced the throttle and shift cables, replaced the shifter slide and missing cable cup, and rebuilt a leaking fuel enrichment valve, restoring proper throttle and shift operation and stopping the fuel leak.

Once those repairs were completed, it was time to run the motor.

It would only run with the choke/enrichment system activated.

That meant we weren't finished.

We pulled the carburetors apart and found exactly what you're seeing in these pictures — a heavy buildup of oil inside the carburetor bowls and fuel circuits. The previously leaking enrichment valve may have contributed to the oil accumulation, and we also found that the fuel in the boat's tank had been WAY over-mixed with 2-stroke oil.

With customer approval, all four carburetors were removed, disassembled and thoroughly cleaned before being reassembled and installed.

Fresh, non-premixed gasoline was supplied to the engine so the factory oil-injection system could do what it was designed to do.

The result?

Motor now starts, idles and runs excellent. ✅
Fuel leak is gone. ✅
Throttle and shifting are restored. ✅
Carburetors are clean and functioning properly. ✅

The customer will need to drain the excessively oil-mixed fuel from the boat, refill it with fresh gasoline, and make sure the oil reservoir is filled before putting it back into service.

Diagnose the problem. Fix what you find. Test it. And don't stop just because the first repair is finished.

🌧️ Cumberland Marine Weather Update 🌧️

I had every intention of possibly calling it an early day with the amount of rain and lightning they're calling for today…

Unfortunately, USPS has other plans. 😂

Apparently I have an important package arriving today, which means I'll be spending most of the day waiting around like a kid on Christmas morning while watching the Cumberland Marine parking lot slowly turn into waterfront property.

If the lightning gets bad, you can find me inside and away from the giant metal building full of tools and other excellent lightning-related decisions. ⚡️

If they're right about 3–5 inches of rain, we may start offering boat slips directly from the parking lot.

🌧️ Weather Update

With the amount of heavy rain and storms expected in our area this afternoon, Cumberland Marine LLC may be closing early today depending on how conditions develop.

If you are planning to stop by or pick up/drop off a boat this afternoon, please call or message us before heading this way to make sure someone is still at the shop.

We’d rather everyone stay safe than try to fight flooded roads and severe weather just to get here.

We’ll keep an eye on conditions throughout the day and make the call accordingly.

Stay safe and stay dry! 🌧️🚤

🔥 THIS is how a marine electronics installation should look.

Another Lowrance Eagle Eye installation completed at Cumberland Marine LLC.

The display was mounted on an adjustable RAM mount, the transducer was properly mounted to the trolling motor, and the wiring was routed through a clamshell for a clean, finished installation.

No exposed holes.
No unnecessary wiring laying across the deck.
No shortcuts.
No “good enough.”

While completing the installation, we also replaced the 3-bank onboard battery charger and corrected improperly wired batteries in the trolling motor system before testing everything for proper operation.

When you're spending good money on marine electronics, the installation should look like it belongs on the boat when it's finished.

Details matter. Wiring matters. Placement matters. The finished product matters.

There are plenty of ways to mount electronics on a boat.

This is how we do it at Cumberland Marine LLC. 🔥

It’s been a little quiet on the Cumberland Marine page lately… but definitely not quiet around the shop. 😎🔧

We’ve been staying busy keeping boats moving and knocking out repairs, and I figured it was probably time to actually show y’all some of what we’ve been working on!

Here’s one that came across the bench recently: a Yamaha 250 tilt & trim rebuild.

Once we got into this one, it was pretty clear somebody had been here before us.

It appeared the previous repair consisted of replacing the outer dust seals, while the rest of the internal seals were left alone. The trim cylinder caps also showed plenty of evidence of previous removal attempts… and apparently somebody brought determination instead of the correct tools. 😂

Needless to say, those caps weren't going back on.

This time, we went all the way through it.

All three cylinders were completely disassembled, old seals and O-rings removed, components cleaned and inspected, and the entire hydraulic assembly was resealed and rebuilt properly.

We also installed new trim cylinder caps because if we're going to fix it right, we're going to make it look right too. 💪

There’s a big difference between replacing the seals you can see from the outside and actually tearing one down and rebuilding the entire hydraulic assembly.

Sometimes these older tilt and trim units don't need to be thrown away and replaced. They just need somebody willing to tear them down and repair them the right way.

We might not have been posting much lately, but Cumberland Marine LLC is still here and still turning wrenches! 🔧🚤

🚤 An unused boat is a broken boat.

One of the worst things you can do to a boat is let it sit. Fuel goes bad, carburetors gum up, batteries die, seals and impellers dry out, and before you know it, you're spending money on repairs instead of making memories on the water.

Boats were built to be used.

If you can, get your boat out on the water at least 20 times a year. Even if it's just a quick cruise around the lake or a couple hours of fishing, regular use keeps everything lubricated, fuel flowing, and problems from developing.

Don't let your boat become a driveway ornament. Get out there, enjoy it, and let it do what it was built to do. 🌊⚓🎣

Customer stated the motor would shift but the lower unit wouldn’t actually go into gear… wellllll we found the problem 😂⚓

This lower unit officially has what we call a “disco party” going on inside 🪩💀

Metallic gear oil, metal flakes, and enough glitter in the drain pan to start a craft project. Motor itself runs great, but the gears and bearings down below are definitely not having a good time anymore.

If your lower unit starts:
👉 whining
👉 grinding
👉 clunking
👉 slipping out of gear
👉 not engaging properly
👉 or leaking water into the gear oil

DON’T ignore it and keep running it. Catching it early can save a whole lot of money before gears and bearings completely self destruct.

Cumberland Marine LLC
Keeping y’all on the water and out of the disco party business ⚓😂
