🌊 Did Steinhatchee, Florida, used to be called Deadman’s Bay? 🌊

✅ Yes! The area we now know as Steinhatchee was originally called Deadman’s Bay — a name that dates back to the early 1500s! 🗺️

⚓ According to legend, Spanish explorers charted the bay as Bahía del Hombre Mu**to, which translates to Deadman’s Bay. The name likely came from a grim discovery of men floating near the river’s mouth — possibly survivors from the Narváez expedition. 💀🚤

🏡 By 1879, local pioneer James Howard Stephens thought Deadman’s Bay wasn’t the best name for attracting settlers, so the area was renamed Stephensville after he offered land for a post office. ✉️🏡

🌴 Finally, in 1931, the name Steinhatchee was adopted, taken from the river’s Native American name meaning river of man or man’s river. 🌊👣

Quick Timeline:
• 🗺️ 1500s–1800s — Called Deadman’s Bay
• 🏡 1879 — Renamed Stephensville
• 🌊 1931–Today — Known as Steinhatchee

🚤 Not sure if you need a Boater Safety Card to rent a boat or jet ski? Let’s break it down! ⛵

Planning to operate or drive the boat or jet ski?
Ask yourself these questions:

✅ Are you at least 16 years old?
✅ Were you born before January 1, 1988?

👉 If YES, you’re not required to have a Boater Safety Education Card (though it’s still a great idea to take the course!). Just bring your valid driver’s license with you.

👉 If NO and you were born after January 1, 1988, Florida law requires you to have a Boater Safety Education Card to legally operate a boat or jet ski.
📄 Please bring both your Boater Safety Certificate and Driver’s License with you to your rental.

🎓 Don’t have one yet? No problem!
Take the Florida 90-day temporary exam and receive your certificate here:

Planning to hit the water more often? We highly recommend taking the lifetime certification course here:
