Day 4: Cruising the Legendary Loch Ness
Our day began with a one-hour cruise from Clansman Harbour on the famous Loch Ness. Surrounded by stunning Highland scenery, we enjoyed spectacular views across the loch and a unique perspective of the historic Urquhart Castle.
Loch Ness is as impressive as it is mysterious. Holding an incredible 7.5 billion cubic metres of freshwater, it contains more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined and is so vast that it never freezes over.
One of the highlights was seeing Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic ruins. Dating back to the 13th century, it played an important role in Scotland’s turbulent history and today remains one of the country’s most photographed landmarks.
For Outlander fans, Loch Ness is especially significant. In Diana Gabaldon’s novels, Claire and Frank Randall visit the loch during their second honeymoon, where Claire spots a mysterious Water Horse, a creature often linked to the legend of Nessie.
After our cruise, we continued to Inverness, arriving around lunchtime. The remainder of the day was free to explore this charming Highland city. Often called the Capital of the Highlands, Inverness is an excellent base for exploring the region’s lochs, glens, waterfalls, castles, and railway legends.
With sunshine and temperatures in the 70s, many of our group enjoyed the city’s outdoor restaurants and beer gardens. A particular favourite was Kool Runnings, serving delicious Caribbean flavours in a relaxed setting.
It was the perfect way to end another memorable day in the Scottish Highlands.
