The Arbuckle Mountains of southern Oklahoma contain some of the oldest exposed rock in North America, granite formed more than a billion years ago that has been pushed up through the surrounding younger limestone by ancient geological forces. 🏔️

The result is one of the most geologically unusual and visually stunning landscapes in the entire state. Travertine springs, including those that feed the Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur, carry dissolved calcium carbonate that deposits in terraced shelves and formations wherever the water flows, building the same white stone you see in the famous springs of Yellowstone or Pamukkale, Turkey, right here in southern Oklahoma.

The Arbuckle Mountains don't look like what most people imagine when they think of Oklahoma. They're ancient, rough-edged, and crossed by streams clear enough to see every pebble on the bottom. The area around Turner Falls and Sulphur draws massive crowds in summer, but there are quieter reaches of the Arbuckles where you can walk along a travertine stream for hours and feel like you're somewhere genuinely remote.
