Four and a half years ago our first production loading of 8.6BLK began. This out-of-production load sent 300Gr Mead FMJs about 950FPS at the muzzle. It shot alright, averaging maybe 2-3 MOA in the early three twist barrels of that vintage. Not too shabby for a first go around.

Present day our 8.6BLK offerings include machined monolithic hunting and target products known for excellent accuracy and terminal effects.

What will the next five years bring to 8.6BLK? What sort of advancements would y'all like to see?

Over the years we've had many requests for the ballistic coefficient (BC) values of our hunting projectiles. The BC values previously published on our website differ from what recent test data shows, so the site has been updated. More sampling is still required, but these numbers are much closer.

Discreet Ballistics 188gr .30 cal
Previously published: .300 G1 BC
Updated: .275 G1 BC (BC SD ≈ .0038)

Discreet Ballistics Tipped 280gr .338 cal
Previously published: .324 G1 BC
Updated: .303 G1 BC (BC SD ≈ .0032)

If you want to hunt successfully with subsonics well beyond 50 yards, these BC values matter every bit as much as muzzle velocity.

This video came in last night from a Discreet customer: a 205 lb East Texas management buck taken at 50 yards with an 8" barrel FIX in 8.6 BLK using tipped 280gr. Double-lunged with a full pass-through and a quarter-sized exit. The deer ran 40 yards and piled up.

Discreet Ballistics customers have come to love the consistency of our products. Low projectile BC SD is a substantial part of it.

It's going to be a busy winter verifying tipped 188gr in hogs.

From the customer:

Lung shot at 115 yards. Bullet went through the bear, and the bear went 15 yards. 280 grain Selous 1020 fps at the muzzle - 338 Arc with a 1:3 twist barrel. The bear was blood shot all the way to its ears. Weight was approximately 400lbs - 7'1 squared. Doesn’t get much better than that.

The heart on the left was impacted by a 135gr A-Tip loaded in 6.5 Creedmoor with a muzzle velocity of approximately 2735fps. The deer was at a range of 165yds when shot. This equates to an impact velocity ~2525fps (1911 ft-lbs KE).

The heart on the right was impacted by a Discreet Ballistics 188gr Selous loaded in 300BLK with a muzzle velocity of approximately 1000 fps. The deer was at a range of approximately 75yds when shot. This equates to an impact velocity of ~950fps (377 ft-lbs KE).

Both heart images above display exit-side holes.

A bullet with high kinetic energy (KE) has the potential to perform well terminally, but only if its design and construction let it use that energy. A high-energy bullet that isn't built to transfer its KE effectively leaves much of that potential unused. Conversely, a properly designed and constructed bullet like the 188gr can deliver highly effective terminal performance even with relatively low KE.
