This is a gem of a book for anyone who is interested in the study of terminal ballistics. In this 1994 classic, Duncan MacPherson does an excellent job breaking down complex topics into digestible knowledge.

One tidbit I had previously missed discusses how the FBI together with physicians met in 1987 to form their first wound ballistics workshop. It was at this workshop where the consensus was made that 12" of pe*******on in gel should be the minimum requirement for defensive pistol ammunition. According to MacPherson, they concluded this based on "knowledge of anatomy" and without "analysis of data from actual shootings". Now nearly forty years later, the Discreet 121gr 9mm expander, with a growing dataset of "actual shootings", is challenging this consensus.

Our terminal ballistics hierarchy of needs has always been:

1. Good shot placement (paramount)
2. Projectile pe*******on that consistently defeats the thoracic wall
3. Maximum projectile expansion upon entering the thoracic cavity
