Seaboard Railroad 2702, an oft-photographed Baldwin-built "babyface" diesel locomotive, appears at Tampa Union Station on January 20, 1961.

These locomotives were often used on Seaboard trains running Tampa-Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice in this era.

🚧 It may be hot, or it may be raining, but restoration work continues at Tampa Union Station!

Tampa Union Station's $4 million renovation is making progress, and here’s a few photos from this week.

🚂 This important project is primarily funded by the Tampa CRA and is sponsored in part by the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources.

The work is led by The Collage Companies and their team of historic preservation specialists, including Austin Historical, Patriot Team Inc - Patriot Team South, All Trades Historical Restoration, and Jerel McCants Architecture, Inc., all coordinated by the City of Tampa, the owner of Union Station.

✨ And yes - daily train service continues! Amtrak’s passengers are being served from an air-conditioned temporary facility located just steps from the historic station. The temporary facility includes restrooms, a waiting area, and friendly station agents while restoration work is underway.

As one of Tampa's most iconic landmarks and a gateway to our city for thousands of travelers each year, we're excited to watch this renovation take shape, and we can't wait to see more progress in the months ahead.

June has been a busy month at Tampa Union Station!

🚂 Renovation work continues, and we’re thrilled to share three new photos taken this morning by Friends of Tampa Union Station Board Member Robert Modys. Every visit reveals another step forward as this 1912 landmark is restored for future generations.

✏️ We also welcomed Plan Hillsborough’s Future Leaders in Planning (FLiP) students in mid-June. Led by Friends Board Member Chris Ahern, the tour introduced these high schoolers to the station’s rich history, ongoing renovation, and Amtrak’s passenger rail to and from Tampa.

🚉 Earlier this month, our Board of Directors gathered for our quarterly meeting, where we discussed exciting plans for the future - including a celebration to mark the completion of the station’s renovation and the anticipated return of Tampa Train Day in 2027. We can’t wait to share more details as those plans come together!

It’s inspiring to see progress happening at Tampa Union Station, and we’re grateful to everyone who continues to support this incredible landmark, including the Tampa CRA, the State of Florida's Historic Preservation Grants program, and many other donors.

The future is looking bright!

Restoration work continues at Tampa Union Station, inside and out! Check out our progress!

From windows and doors to restroom makeovers, plaster, and fresh paint, so much is on the list for restoring our historic 1912 Tampa Union Station!

The project is being funded by the Tampa CRA, a grant from the State of Florida's Historic Preservation Grants program, and many other donors. Substantial completion is set to take place this fall.

Here's another one from the history files! Tampa Union Station as it looked in November 1974.

That's an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser parked out front among the other cars, no doubt waiting for someone arriving on an inbound Amtrak train. Who knows the makes and models of the other automobiles?

Better yet, who knows whatever became of those two concrete benches out by the sidewalk to Nebraska Avenue?

History moment: Here's a great looking photo taken on June 26, 1967, showing Seaboard Air Line and Atlantic Coast Line passenger trains at Tampa Union Station-- just 4 days before the merger of the two railroads into the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad.

Before that merger, this was the typical setup at Tampa Union Station, with Atlantic Coast Line trains using the lower numbered tracks and the Seaboard trains using the higher numbered tracks at the station.

For those really into the details, Seaboard E8 diesel locomotive 3054 on the train at left was constructed in 1950 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors. The other engine, Atlantic Coast Line E7 model 536, was constructed in 1946 by the same builder. Locomotive 3054, in fact, continued to serve into the Amtrak era once it took over passenger trains in 1971.

Last week, Tampa Union Station became a member of the inaugural class of the Century Club!

The Century Club was created by the Tampabay Community Design Center to recognize Tampa's 100+ year old buildings and homes. The history and stories behind these loved and preserved places is what makes Tampa so unique.

Tampa's active train station in Downtown Tampa is currently undergoing a $4M renovation, and we can't wait to display the Century Club recognition once the renovation is completed.

And guess what? You can still take the train from Tampa while the renovation is underway! There's a nice air-conditioned temporary space for Amtrak passengers located just footsteps from the station.

Scaffolding up means work in progress! Work to the exterior of Tampa Union Station during its restoration includes exterior cleaning, masonry repairs, and window rehabilitation.

Once done, the water leaks which have plagued the building for so long will be a thing of the past.

The interior, of course, will also get a glow up, with plaster repairs, restroom renovations, and new paint.

Jerel McCants Architecture is leading this project with the Collage Companies serving as the general contractor. The Downtown Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency and the State of Florida are major funders of the restoration.

And all of it is possible because of the donors to and volunteers of Friends of Tampa Union Station. Thanks for your support!
