Check out the Western Pacific. What do you see? Basically nothing. Feast your eyes on this, because it won't stay calm for long. We have a developing El Niño, and El Niños tend to ignite wild typhoon seasons. So, I expect to be out there a lot this year—maybe soon. Some of the long-range ensemble models are starting to suggest a possible typhoon threat to the Philippines between 10 and 15 days. It's too early to know, really, but it's interesting the models are already showing such scenarios. May typhoon impacts in the Philippines are unusual, but they do happen—for example, Cat-5 NIDA, which hit Catanduanes Island in May 2004. Keep vigilant!
