🚌 The Physics of a School Bus: A/C During Extreme Heat

When afternoon temperatures reach 105°F, our school bus A/C systems work continuously to reduce cabin temperatures. Each bus is equipped with two A/C units. Properly operating systems face an enormous heat load when the temperatures soar.

Why can a school bus still feel warm?

☀️ More than 20 large windows allow intense sunlight to heat the cabin.

🚌 The metal body absorbs and retains heat, with less insulation than a personal vehicle.

🚪 Doors open at every stop, allowing cooled air to escape while hot outdoor air enters.

👥 Dozens of passengers generate body heat and humidity inside a much larger space than a car.

Because of these conditions, the A/C can be operating as designed but the cabin can still feels much warmer than expected—especially during afternoon routes.

Our entire fleet of school buses is equipped with air conditioning. During periods of extreme heat, our technicians continuously monitor each system. Any bus with an underperforming A/C system is immediately removed from service and replaced with a spare.

Our school bus technicians are working tirelessly to provide our students with the coolest and safest ride possible.

Day 4: Transportation Safety Series – Student Behavior & Distracted Driving 🚌

A safe bus ride starts with every student making good choices.

Student behavior has a direct impact on the driver's ability to focus on the road. Staying seated, using inside voices, respecting others, and following the driver's directions help create a safe environment for everyone on board.

Remember:
✔️ Stay in your assigned seat.
✔️ Keep the aisle clear.
✔️ Use respectful language.
✔️ Keep distractions to a minimum.
✔️ Follow the driver's instructions the first time.
✔️ Never scream, yell, or use any type of noise maker.

Every school bus is equipped with audio and video recording systems to help ensure a safe ride for all students.

When students focus on good behavior, drivers can stay focused on safety.

The Transportation Dept was busy today supporting our campuses, and community partners.

We started the day at Bonham Middle School 6th Grade Orientation, volunteered at Love of Christ Ministries, and wrapped it up with Meet the Teacher at 8 elementary campuses.

Its always a GREAT day to be a Wildcat!! 💙

🚌 Temple ISD Transportation Safety Series
Day 3: Safety Doesn't End When the Bus Drives Away

A safe trip home starts long before your child steps off the school bus.

While the Transportation Department establishes safe bus stop locations, parents and guardians play the most important role in helping students travel safely between the bus stop and home.

Take time to talk with your child about:
🚶 The safest route to and from the bus stop.
🚦 Where to safely cross streets and obey traffic signals.
👀 Staying alert and avoiding distractions like phones or headphones.
🚫 Never talking to or accepting rides from strangers.
🏡 What to do if they don't recognize someone at the bus stop or if they don't feel safe.

Bus stops may be located up to one-quarter mile from home for elementary students and up to one-half mile for middle and high school students. Every family should have a plan that helps their student travel safely each day.

Temple ISD does not require a parent or guardian to be present when elementary students are dropped off. Each family should decide whether their child is ready to walk home independently or if alternate arrangements are needed.

When parents and schools work together, we create safer journeys for every student.

🏡 Tonight's Safety Challenge

Take 5 minutes to walk your child's route from the bus stop to your home.

As you walk together:

Identify the safest places to cross the street.
Point out trusted neighbors or safe places they can go if they need help.
Review what to do if a stranger approaches them.
Ask your child to explain the route back to you to make sure they understand the plan.

These conversations build confidence, independence, and most importantly—safe habits.

❤️ Safe Routes. Smart Choices. Stronger Together.
