The overwater bungalow photos never show you the quarter mile walk back to the restaurant.

I’ve stayed in overwater bungalows across several French Polynesia properties, and they’re genuinely special. Waking up over the lagoon, water right below the deck, it’s everything the photos promise.

What the photos don’t show: at one property, my bungalow was a quarter mile out on the pontoon, and I wasn’t even in the farthest room. Every trip back to the restaurant, the pool, the spa, meant that walk again. For some travelers that’s part of the appeal, total separation, total quiet. For others, especially anyone who wants to be able to duck back to the room easily, it adds up fast.

Beach bungalows get overlooked because they’re not the iconic photo, but they often get you the same lagoon view, plus mountain views, plus you’re a short walk across sand to everything else. Direct lagoon access, just from the beach instead of a pontoon.

Neither is the wrong choice. It just depends on how you actually want to move through your days there.

Spring break in Hawaii and spring break in French Polynesia are not the same trip. Here's who each one is actually for.

Both get requested constantly for spring break. They deliver very different weeks.

Hawaii works well for families who want activity, easy flights, and a trip that still feels like a vacation even with kids setting the pace.

French Polynesia is a better fit for couples, or families with older kids, who want something quieter and are comfortable with a longer journey to get there.

Neither is the "better" spring break destination. They're just built for different versions of the week.

Spending the next two days in Dallas at a regional travel industry conference, meeting directly with suppliers and sitting in on sessions most travelers never think about.

This is the part of the job that doesn’t show up in an itinerary. Relationships with the people who actually run these resorts and destinations, and staying current on what’s changing before it affects a client’s trip.

Not glamorous. Just part of doing this well.

A client called me a month ago about Christmas in Hawaii. We were already down to backup options.

This wasn’t someone booking last minute. This was a month ago, for a trip four months out.

By the time we started looking, most of the top oceanfront categories at the properties they wanted were already gone. Not sold out entirely, just gone in the configurations that actually mattered to them. We found something that worked, but it took real digging, and it wasn’t their first choice.

That’s not a scare tactic. That’s just what December in Hawaii looks like from where I sit.

If Christmas or New Year’s in Hawaii is even a maybe, the window to actually have options is closing, not closed yet, but closing.

Traveling well isn’t about being spontaneous. It’s about deciding early enough to have real choices.

That’s really what this whole month has been about. Wellness applied to how you plan, not just where you go. A group trip worth traveling toward. And the reminder that the best experiences usually go to whoever decided first, not whoever decided fastest.

Two of those decisions are due now. Holiday Hawaii still has room, but it’s closing. Spring break for 2027 is wide open, and August was the easy month to start.

If either one has been sitting with you, let’s talk before September changes the math.

The trip is getting close. And I keep doing it again.

Three weeks until I leave for Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, and my first Avalon Waterways sailing.

I'm not going as an advisor on this one, I'm going as a guest, traveling along with the Suitcases & Savoir Faire Society. But old habits don't fully switch off. I'll notice things anyway - what surprises me, what I'd tell a client to expect, even without meaning to.

New Zealand 2027 is officially on the calendar for the Suitcases & Savoir Faire Society.

Fiords. Hobbiton. A soak in geothermal hot springs, followed by an evening kayak tour through a glowworm-lit cave. Twelve days across both islands, with the kind of pacing that actually lets you take it in instead of rushing through it.

I'll be there the whole way, traveling with the group and on hand for anything you need, alongside members from across our agency who are booking in too.

We kept this one small on purpose. That's not a sales line, it's the only way a trip like this actually works. Which also means it won't fit everyone who wants in.
