There’s something special about watching a child climb into the saddle and head out on a horseback adventure in Cades Cove.

For some, it’s their very first time on a horse. There might be a few nerves at the beginning, but before long those nerves turn into smiles, excitement, and a memory they’ll be talking about long after vacation is over.

At Cades Cove Riding Stables, horseback riding is an experience the whole family can share. Our trail rides take you away from the busy roads and into the peaceful woods of the Great Smoky Mountains, where you can slow down and experience this beautiful place from the saddle.

Sometimes the best vacation memories aren’t made at an attraction or looking through a windshield. They’re made on the back of a horse, surrounded by the mountains, with the people you love.

There’s something special about slowing down, sitting back, and enjoying the scenery from a horse-drawn carriage. With the sounds of the horses, the mountain air, and the beautiful surroundings of Cades Cove, it’s a way to experience the Smokies that feels like stepping back in time.

These are great for a post highlighting the drawings guests have made for the stables. Here’s one I’d use:

Some of our favorite memories at Cades Cove Riding Stables end up hanging right here on our walls.

Over the season, young riders and visitors have brought us drawings, paintings, pictures, and other creations inspired by their horses and their time at the stables. We’ve saved them and proudly displayed them for everyone to see.

For us, these are more than just drawings. They remind us that a horseback ride through Cades Cove can become a memory a child carries home with them. Sometimes that memory even turns into a piece of artwork that finds its way back to us.

We especially love seeing the horses through the eyes of our younger guests. Every picture is different, and every one has its own story.

Thank you to Lilly, Noah, Aubree, and all the other young artists who have shared their creations with us. Our walls wouldn't be the same without you.

A Fed Bear Is a Dead Bear Please Keep Trash Away From Wildlife

Seeing a black bear in the Smoky Mountains can be an incredible experience, but seeing one digging through someone’s trash is a completely different story.

When bears get access to garbage, food scraps, coolers, or other human food, they can quickly learn that people mean an easy meal. Once that happens, bears may begin returning to homes, campgrounds, parking areas, and businesses looking for more.

The problem isn’t just the mess they leave behind. Bears that become accustomed to human food can lose their natural fear of people. That can lead to dangerous encounters, property damage, and ultimately serious consequences for the bear.

That’s why properly securing trash is so important. Never intentionally feed a bear, never leave food or garbage where a bear can reach it, and give bears plenty of space when you see them.

We all love seeing black bears in the Great Smoky Mountains. The best thing we can do for them is help keep them wild.

Enjoy them from a distance. Take pictures. Make memories. But please don’t give them a reason to associate people with food.

Protect the bears. Secure your trash. Keep wildlife wild.

Behind every ride is a crew that keeps everything moving.

Long before guests saddle up, there are horses to feed, tack to check, trails to ride, equipment to prepare, and plenty of work around the barn. Then comes one of the best parts of the day—meeting our riders and heading into the woods.

Our guides don’t just lead the way. They help riders get comfortable, keep an eye on the horses, answer questions, share a few laughs, and help make each trip something our guests will remember.

These photos show a little bit of what life around the stables looks like—from getting horses ready at the barn to riding beneath the trees on a beautiful Smoky Mountain day.

It takes good horses and good people to make a great trail ride, and we’re thankful for the crew that puts in the work every day.

Some of the best memories start right here.

Before heading out on the trail, our team takes the time to help riders get comfortable in the saddle, make adjustments, and make sure both horse and rider are ready for the adventure ahead. For younger riders especially, those first few minutes on horseback can be a pretty big moment.

Then it’s time to saddle up and head out.

There’s just something different about seeing the Great Smoky Mountains from horseback. The pace slows down, the noise fades away, and for a little while it’s just you, your horse, the trail, and the mountains.

Whether it’s your child’s first horseback ride, a family tradition, or simply something you’ve always wanted to experience, these are the kinds of Smoky Mountain memories that can stick with you for years.
