Reinforced flight deck doors transformed aviation security after 9/11. But whenever the door opens in flight, a vulnerability remains.

Secondary flight deck barriers help close that gap, providing an additional layer of protection and giving pilots critical time to secure the flight deck during a potential threat.

For 25 years, ALPA has advocated for secondary barriers because aviation security is strongest when every layer of defense is in place. While secondary barriers are now required on newly manufactured passenger aircraft, thousands of aircraft already in service still operate without them.

Protecting every flight deck means protecting pilots, passengers, crew, and communities on the ground.

Today marks a hard-won aviation security milestone: every newly manufactured passenger aircraft must now be equipped with a secondary flight deck barrier — a requirement ALPA has advocated for since 9/11.

But the work isn't finished. Planes already in service can still fly without one. ALPA is calling on every airline to retrofit its existing fleet, so protection doesn't depend on which aircraft shows up at the gate.

On the anniversary of the "Azores Glider" save, we remember one of aviation's greatest saves and one of the most remarkable examples of teamwork on the flight deck.

On Aug. 24, 2001, Air Transat Flight 236 lost both engines over the Atlantic Ocean after a fuel leak silently drained the aircraft's fuel supply. Faced with an unprecedented nighttime emergency, the captain and first officer worked side by side to diagnose the problem, manage the crisis, and glide their Airbus A330 more than 100 miles to a safe landing in the Azores.

Their extraordinary skill, professionalism and crew coordination helped save all 306 people on board, turning what could have been a tragedy into one of the most celebrated examples of airmanship in aviation history.

For their remarkable actions, Pilotes d'Air Transat ALPA/Air Transat ALPA Pilots Capt. Piché and F/O De Jager were honored with ALPA's Superior Airmanship Award.

Their story underscores why at least two pilots are needed on the flight deck of every commercial airliner, at all times. In high-stakes situations, shared workload, cross-checking, communication and collaborative decision-making are not simply best practices. They are critical layers of safety.

Safer skies shouldn't be a partisan choice. It's not ROTOR Act vs. ALERT Act — Congress should take the best of both and pass one strong aviation safety bill that closes critical gaps and honors the victims of PSA Flight 5342.

Nineteen years ago today, the crew of Northwest Airlines Flight 908 encountered one of the rarest failures a Boeing 747 crew could face: the loss of all three Inertial Navigation Systems shortly after takeoff from Taipei during severe weather.

With limited instrumentation, no dependable weather radar, language barriers with air traffic control, and thunderstorms surrounding the airport, the crew declared an emergency and worked together through four approach attempts before safely landing the aircraft.

Their professionalism and calm decision-making under extraordinary pressure earned Capt. Dennis Leighton, First Officer Edward Sparks, and Second Officer David Kritzer ALPA's Superior Airmanship Award. Their actions that day nearly two decades ago serve as a lasting reminder of the critical importance of always having at least two skilled airline pilots on the flight deck.

Breeze Airways Pilots play a vital role in connecting communities across the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean, flying to 77 destinations across North America.

With more than 700 professional pilots operating a fleet of EMB190s and A220s from 11 bases across the U.S., Breeze pilots first became an ALPA member in 2022. It's not unusual for airline pilots to pursue other interests when they're not flying for their airline. Capt. Ramin Pourteymour (United Pilots) is no exception to that.

It all began with a trip to Playa de Rosarito, Mexico. Pourteymour spotted an injured, malnourished dog on the roadside. "I couldn't look away," he remembered. "I just had to stop the car." Since then, he's rescued over 1,000 and founded Last Hope 4 Paws, a non-profit dedicated to saving abandoned dogs and cats.
