On July 1st, 1942, Union City Army Airfield—now Everett-Stewart Regional Airport—began training Army Air Forces cadets as part of the nation's World War II pilot training program.

Student pilots trained here in several aircraft, including the Fairchild PT-19, Boeing-Stearman PT-17, and the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Every pilot started somewhere, and for many of them, that journey began right here in Northwest Tennessee.

Flight training was operated by the Embry-Riddle McKay Company and the Riddle Aeronautical Institute under contract with the U.S. Army Air Forces. Between 1942 and 1944, hundreds of cadets came through Union City to earn their wings before moving on to advanced training and military service.

The photos in this post show some of the aircraft flown during that time, along with rare images of the original airfield during World War II. It's hard to imagine now, but more than 80 years ago these runways were filled with training aircraft and young pilots preparing to serve their country.

We're proud to preserve and share this part of our airport's history.
