We recently performed some service work on a Baja with a customized big block engine that our customer purchased a year ago. We found an automotive carburetor installed on a marine engine, which #1 is not USCG approved, and can lead to fines, if you are boarded and found to have automotive parts on your boat engine.
And #2, it could be a very dangerous situation if the carburetor needle/float stuck in the open position causing fuel to pour over the top of the engine, potentially causing a fire or an explosion.
Under no circumstances, is it ok to use automotive carburetors, alternators, or starters on a marine engine.
In the attached picture, the carburetor in the background is a Holley automotive carburetor, the carburetor in the foreground is a Holley marine carburetor with proper "J tubes".
