Retail peak season is closer than it feels. In fact, it may be coming earlier every year.

Import data shows that retailers pulled orders forward ahead of tariff changes and global shipping uncertainty this summer, pushing what's usually a slower month to near record volume. It's a good reminder that peak season doesn't always follow the calendar. Sometimes it shows up early.

Storm season is heating up, and so is the risk to supply chains.

NOAA now puts the odds of a very strong "Super El Niño" developing by the end of 2026 at 81%, with the biggest impacts expected to hit between October and December. For shippers and carriers, that means more than just rain in the forecast. Weather related slowdowns already account for a significant share of roadway delays every year, and stronger storm patterns tend to mean more of them.

Heavy rain alone can cut highway speeds by double digits. Add flooding, high winds, and blocked routes, and delays start compounding fast, driving up costs for everyone from carriers to the businesses waiting on their freight.
