What’s it like to jump from a WWII aircraft? The Chuters know, because they’ve done it 🪂✈️
Josh Hitchcock and his team had the opportunity at The Spirit of St. Louis Airshow to dive from the Commemorative Air Force's restored C-47, “That’s All, Brother” — allowing them to experience a glimpse into what the paratroopers did over D-Day.
“‘That's All, Brother’ has been restored so perfectly that it felt like I was sitting on the plane about to drop troops over France. I was looking around trying to imagine what it would have been like to be a 19- or 20-year-old kid that was about to drop behind enemy lines,” he said.
As for whether skydiving from a WWII-era plane or a modern craft changes his work, he said: “Skydivers want to fly in the sky and just need an aircraft to get us up there. Whatever that aircraft is, there is not much difference.
“However, when you get a rare opportunity to jump from a unique airplane like ‘That's All, Brother,’ which has an amazing history, it does change things a bit. The airplane ride is now much more memorable and fun.
“There isn’t much difference for the jump, but ‘That’s All, Brother’ has a lot more room to spread out than modern jump planes. It's always nice to not feel like a sardine in a tin can on the way up.”
