Tidewater Transportation and Terminals The largest inland marine transportation company west of the Mississippi River. We provide connections for truck, rail and waterborne freight.

Tidewater - 90 Years of Service, Pride & Integrity
Linking the Pacific Northwest with the World

In 1932, Lew Russell, Sr., became interested in the river transportation of industrial commodities and began renting steam-powered sternwheel ships to move customer products from port to port. Throughout the ensuing years Lew set the framework of Tidewater Barge Lines and ten years later, in 1942, the

Tidewater-Shaver Transportation Company was established. In 1960, Tidewater became a full-fledged, independent tug and barge transportation company under the name of Tidewater Barges Lines. In 1951, Ray Hickey got a job as a deck hand on a Tidewater tugboat. After spending his first four years on the Leland James, Ray transferred to the ocean division and became the chief engineer on the Tillamook, Tidewater's first ocean-going tugboat. In 1967, Ray became the operations manager of the ocean division and then was promoted to general manager in 1970, overseeing both ocean and river operations. He became president of Tidewater in 1977. From 1974 to 1996, the company would add tugboats Captain Bob, Defiance, Invader, Outlaw, Maverick, Tidewater, Sundial, the Chief and Hurricane, while adding over twenty grain and grain/petroleum combination barges, petroleum barges Glenn, Atlas, Pioneer, Explorer, and Prospector, as well as a number of container and deck barges. Tidewater purchased both Knappton's and Columbia Marine Lines' assets in 1984 and 1987, respectively, adding the boats Rebel and Challenger to the fleet, plus thirty grain barges and several general-use barges. Tidewater Terminal Company was established in the early 1950s to support the barge transportation business. Terminals at Vancouver WA, Umatilla OR, Pasco WA and Clarkston WA were built to receive and deliver bulk liquid products to and from barges. Beginning in the late 1970s additional Terminal facilities were constructed or operated by Tidewater Terminal Company at Clarkston WA, Pasco WA, Boardman OR and Vancouver WA to handle containerized cargo and wood chips. The Snake River Terminal was rebuilt in 1995, with a new automated truck rack, additional petroleum storage and upgraded pump and piping systems. In 1996, Ray Hickey sold Tidewater, now the largest inland tug and barge company west of the Mississippi, to an East Coast investment group. Wes Hickey served as president of Tidewater from 1996-1999. During this time the petroleum barge Tri-Cities Voyager was built. Stephen Frasher served as president from 1999-2003. Raymond Kiive served as president from 2003-2004. In 2005, members of Tidewater's management team in partnership with equity investor Endeavor Capital bought Tidewater. Dennis McVicker is president & CEO. During the period of 2005-2008, four new double-hulled petroleum barges were built: New Dawn, New Endeavor, New Vision and New Frontier. In 2008, Tidewater purchased Foss Maritime's upper river assets which consisted of 2 tugs, 7 grain barges and 13 bin and flat deck barges. Tidewater announces partnership with new equity investor, Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners in December 2012. June 2013, Bob Curcio joins Tidewater as its new President & CEO. In July 2014, Tidewater Environmental Service, Inc. acquired the assets of West Coast Marine Cleaning, Inc., a Vancouver-based marine and industrial cleaning services company. Tidewater awards contract to build 3 new tugboats to Vigor Fab in Portland. The Crown Point was delivered to Tidewater in April, 2015 (christened: June 27, 2015). The second new tug, Granite Point, was delivered in December 2015, and the final tug of the Point Class series, Ryan Point, was delivered in June 2016. The Granite Point and Ryan Point were christened on June 11, 2016. In September 2017, Tidewater acquired Canada-based Island Tug and Barge (islandtug.com) and ITB Subsea (itbsubsea.com). Island Tug is the West Coast's largest bulk transporter of refined petroleum products, and ITB Subsea ranks a one of the premier submarine cable layers in Canada. In January 2019, Upper Bay Infrastructure Partners acquired Tidewater Transportation and Terminals from Stonepeak. Tidewater launches a state-of-the-art, 24-hour ethanol unit train railcar unloading rack at their Snake River Terminal. Two new 65,000 barrel steel tanks were constructed to provide reliable operating storage in August 2019. In January 2020, Todd Busch joins Tidewater as its new President & CEO. In 2021, Tidewater added a new bio-blending system to its Umatilla, Oregon Terminal. The system includes two 40,000 gallon storage tanks, off-loading and blending pumps, and over 700 feet of heat traced piping and controls. This project puts our customers and Tidewater in a much better position to meet the growing demand for blending B-99.

Join Tidewater at this year’s Snake River Family Festival at Boyer Park & Marina (June 13) for a day of family fun, learning, live music, yummy food, and celebrating the incredible Columbia-Snake River System!

Stop by Tidewater's booth to learn how Tidewater helps move the products communities rely on every day. Kids (and adults!) can stamp a commodity on our barge board and place a token worth $3 toward one of three local charities: Jackson’s Pay It Forward Foundation, Palouse Empire Fair Foundation, or Family Promise of Cowlitz County.

Hope to see you there! 😀

Congratulations to Max Jones on an incredible career milestone!

At 2359 on 5/12/26, Max successfully completed his check-off ride, advancing from Apprentice Deck Mechanic to Deck Mechanic to Apprentace Mate Steersman to Pilot! Throughout his training, Max has consistently demonstrated leadership, professionalism, safe navigation practices, vessel operational knowledge, and strong interpersonal skills. He leads by example and brings a positive attitude and strong work ethic to the job every day.

Mariners are the backbone of the Columbia-Snake River System, and achievements like this represent years of hard work, dedication, and commitment. Many of our wheelhouse operators begin their careers as deck mechanics, learning every aspect of the job from the deck up before deciding to pursue the demanding path to the wheelhouse.

Tidewater invests significant time, resources, and mentorship into developing future operators through our Mates Program, but it also takes tremendous effort and perseverance from the individual mariner. Long hours of training, studying, hands-on experience, and dedication are required to earn a seat in the wheelhouse — and Max has absolutely earned it.

Congratulations, Max! 🙌

On a beautiful Saturday morning in the Portland Harbor, Tidewater proudly launched the Mount Rainier, the first of four new refined products barges at Gunderson Marine & Iron.

This vessel, part of a new series designed for the Columbia-Snake River System, will help strengthen the reliable delivery of critical energy supplies across the Pacific Northwest.

A huge thank you to Gunderson, Dee Burch, and the incredibly skilled tradespeople, engineers, and project managers who made this moment possible. Your craftsmanship, coordination, and dedication were on full display.

Great day on the water with great partners!

Tidewater was proud to host representatives from the Maritime Administration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a tug ride-along aboard the Crown Point—running from our Vancouver terminal up to Bonneville Dam on the mighty Columbia River.

From rain to sunshine, waterfalls to bridges, it was a day that showcased the beauty, and importance, of this river system. Even better was the opportunity for meaningful conversations about navigation, reliability, and the role our waterways play in keeping the region moving.

A big thank you to MARAD, USACE, and our incredible Tidewater crew for making it such a memorable day. 😊

Had a great opportunity to visit Little Goose Dam near Dayton, WA this week alongside Neil Maunu and Nicole Kach with the Pacific Northwest Waterways Association during the annual lock closure on the Columbia Snake River System.

These planned closures are a critical part of maintaining the reliability, safety, and long-term performance of our inland navigation system. Seeing that work up close is always impressive!

A sincere thank you to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Walla Walla District team for the tour, the insights, and for the incredible work you do every day to keep this system running safely and efficiently for the communities, farmers, and industries that depend on it.

A foggy and cold Vancouver morning made for a pretty perfect backdrop this week as Waste Connections’ education team visited Tidewater’s Vancouver Terminal and Shipyard. No rain, just classic Columbia River fog, lifting just in time to reveal the cranes at Terminal 6 as the tour wrapped up.🌫️

Huge thanks to Waste Connections for spending the morning with us and taking a closer look at the work we do together. Since 1992, Tidewater and Waste Connections have partnered to move all of Clark County’s municipal solid waste by barge - keeping thousands and thousands of trucks off already busy roadways every year.

It’s not always glamorous work, but it’s essential, efficient, and better for our communities and environment. Grateful for the partnership and the chance to share how it all comes together on the river.😊

As we ring in the New Year, we’re honoring a sound that has echoed along the Columbia River for generations.

When the tugboat The Legend retired after 60 years of service, we heard from people up and down the river who told us they missed the sound of her steam whistle. So we made sure it would live on. Ten years ago The Legend’s beautiful brass whistle was transferred and retrofitted onto the tug Crown Point, continuing a tradition that means so much to our river communities.

Here’s to new beginnings, lasting traditions, and the familiar sounds that connect us all. Happy New Year from all of us at Tidewater. 🙂

Santa and Mrs. Claus Arrived… by Tug! 🎅✨

On November 28, Tidewater proudly delivered Santa and Mrs. Claus to the Vancouver City Dock and Rotary Way for Vancouver Rotary’s annual Tree Lighting Celebration — marking our third year helping kick off the holidays by tugboat! A tradition is definitely taking shape.

Tidewater’s Crown Point made the festive journey escorted by a shimmering parade of Columbia River Christmas ships and sailboats, guiding Santa to the waterfront.

And as if the night wasn’t magical enough, everyone was treated to one of the most beautiful sunsets of the season. 🌅💗

A huge thank-you to Vancouver Rotary for organizing this wonderful community event each year. Tidewater loves being part of the celebration and spreading holiday cheer along the river.
