Montcalm Skywarn training is back! We are combining with Gratiot County until otherwise stated. Current certifications are required for active volunteers and must be completed every 2 years. This also applies to online Skywarn training. All in-person training attendees that are in Montcalm county will be added to a volunteer roster and issued spotter IDs. We are now making it easier to volunteer. We also use Zello and GMRS radios, in addition to ham radio. For GMRS, you need a license and call sign, but no test is required, unlike ham radio. We will eventually have a setup to help people obtain their GMRS licenses, as Zello can be unreliable due to its reliance on phone data or WiFi.

Fox 17 did an article about very important things we do as amateur radio operators and also now implementing Gmrs radio which has same rules and call signs but no test like amateur radio

This also includes the skywarn program as well.

Two new additions to the Motorola mcs 2000 the handheld is dual band uhf and vhf the radio on the left is 50 watt Gmrs. As we are working to get more spotters we are trying to get ham radio involved as well as starting Gmrs . Gmrs license has the same rules but No need for testing. We are still working on the ham side of skywarn again . Taking steps at a time.
