Before the highways and long lines of cars, the honking and the constant time concerns the journey into Virginia City aboard the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad was an experience unlike any other.
As passengers rode toward town in the late 1800s, they would have watched the rugged high desert slowly give way to towering mine structures, busy and loud stamp mills, smoke drifting from ore processing operations (blocking your view), and the constant movement from hauling supplies up and silver ore down the mountain. The hillsides surrounding the Comstock were alive with industry, the heartbeat of the Comstock.
Travelers may have spotted, miners covered in dust returning from long shifts underground, or elegant visitors arriving from San Francisco to witness the rich boomtown everyone was talking about. At night, Virginia City glowed with saloons, boarding houses, hotels, and businesses that were lit by lamps as the town earned its reputation.
The railroad itself became a symbol of innovation, invention and determination, hauling millions in gold and silver while still connecting the isolated mining town to the rest of the country. For many riders, the first sight of Virginia City emerging from the hills was unforgettable. Can you imagine the site then?
Today, riding the rails into town still offers a glimpse into that same landscape and history that shaped the American West although now a little less noisy and a lot less stamp mill activity, it is now the sound of laughter that powers the heartbeat of VC. 🚂

Choose from departures at 6:00 PM or 7:30 PM and journey on the V&T as a thrilling mystery unfolds right before your eyes. A crime has been committed… but you need to find out who did it? As the train rolls through the beautiful Nevada landscape, riders will mingle with a cast of suspicious and humorous characters, discover clues, and put their detective skills to the test.
Enjoy delicious snacks, refreshing drinks, and plenty of twists and turns along the way as you fully immerse yourself in this unique theatrical experience inspired by the golden age of rail travel and classic murder mysteries.

🚂 On This Day in V&T History — May 31, 1950 🚂

There’s a date in May that quietly marked the end of an era on the Comstock… and the beginning of the story we’re still telling today.
On May 31, 1950, the Virginia and Truckee Railroad ran its final revenue train, closing the chapter on decades of hauling silver, supplies, and stories through Nevada’s mountains. That last train was pulled by none other than locomotive No. 27, stepping in at the very end after another engine was lost to fire just weeks before.

For over 80 years, the V&T had been the lifeline of the Comstock, they were moving millions in gold and silver ore, connecting boomtowns, and carrying everyone from miners to millionaires. At the railroads peak, as many as 45 trains a day came and went from Virginia City.
So when that final train rolled into Reno on that late May day… it wasn’t just the end of service.
It was the end of a roaring, steam-filled chapter of the American West. At least as we knew it.
But here’s the part we love most…
The story didn’t stay in the past.
Decades later, the V&T came back to life,rails were relaid, engines restored, New engines to the line brought in and history brought back into motion. Today, when you hear that whistle echo through the hills, you’re hearing something that almost disappeared forever.
From the last run… to the next ride.

This Memorial Day, along with everyone else we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸❤️

Families gather and traditions continue, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad is proud to still be running train rides today, carrying passengers on the same historic trails that have connected generations for over a century.

Join us for a day filled with scenic views, laughter, history, and memories made aboard the V&T Railroad. From all of us at the railroad, thank you to those who served and to the families who carry their legacy.

Yesterday’s Opening Day was one for the books! ❤️🚂

From excited little faces boarding the train for the first time to families making new memories together along the rails, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad was filled with laughter, smiles, and so much excitement all day long. We heard the stories about how some of you do rhis every year, we saw some new riders both young and old! Seeing generations come together to experience this piece of Nevada history is exactly what makes this railroad so special. Our conductors and engineers are back at it today!
