If you hunt in parts of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia or southern West Virginia this October, don’t be alarmed if airplanes start dropping little fish-smelling mystery snacks all over the woods.
The USDA plans to distribute roughly **2.46 million oral rabies vaccine baits** in an effort to slow the spread of raccoon rabies.
These baits are coated in fishmeal because apparently raccoons have the same dietary standards as a guy eating sardines at deer camp.
For hunters, the instructions are pretty simple:
**See one? Leave it alone.**
Don’t kick it.
Don’t put it in your pocket.
Don’t use it for catfish bait.
And for the love of all things holy, **DO NOT EAT IT.**
Yes, we know it smells like fish.
Yes, you’ve been sitting in that tree stand since 4:30 AM.
Yes, you forgot your Little Debbie cakes in the truck.
Still not a snack.
The baits are intended for wildlife, primarily raccoons, and USDA says dogs or cats that gobble down several may wind up with an upset stomach.
So if your hunting dog suddenly discovers 14 mysterious fish-flavored cubes in the woods, you may want to intervene before he turns the back seat of your truck into a biological disaster.
Bottom line: the strange little bait you find in October probably isn’t poison, it isn’t somebody baiting deer, and it definitely isn’t a new flavor of protein bar.
It’s rabies prevention.
**Let the raccoons have this one. 😂**
Who hunts in one of these areas? Have you ever actually found one of these vaccine baits in the woods?
