Speak Up! Help Virginia Age Better!

The Virginia Center on Aging (VCoA) is conducting a statewide needs assessment to inform the development of the next Virginia State Plan for Aging Services. We want to hear from: Adults age 60+, caregivers, advocates and service providers who are residents of Virginia. Individuals age 18 and older who live in Virginia are eligible to complete the survey.

Your responses to this survey are completely anonymous. The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes and is best completed all at one time. Except for a few eligibility questions, all questions are optional.

Find the survey at: https://tinyurl.com/Aging-Survey. The survey will be open until September 25, 2026.

Learn more about DARS and the State Plan by visiting https://bit.ly/4bSlC9W.

National Grief Awareness Day is observed on Aug. 30, offering a moment to honor the many ways people experience loss.

Grief is not always linear, and it does not follow a schedule. It may come in waves—quiet one day and overwhelming the next. We may grieve the person someone used to be, the future we imagined, the routines that changed, the caregiving role we never expected, or the empty space after the loss of a beloved pet.

Today, we encourage gentleness: light a candle, say a loved one’s name, share a memory, step outside, call someone who understands, or reach out for support. If someone you know is grieving, a simple message—“I’m thinking of you. I’m here to listen.”—can mean more than you know. Grief deserves compassion, patience, and community.

As National Wellness Month comes to a close, we are reflecting on the small, realistic ways wellness shows up in everyday life: one choice, one moment, one connection at a time. Maybe you drank more water, took a short walk, shared a meal, called a friend, asked for help, joined a group, rested when you needed to, or simply gave yourself grace. Each small step matters.

Wellness is not about perfection. It is about noticing what supports your body, mind, heart, spirit, and community—and choosing what is possible today.

What small wellness step helped you this month? We would love to hear in the comments.

And remember, Bay Aging is here year-round to connect older adults, caregivers, and families with services and support that help our neighbors live well. Call 800-493-0238 to learn more.

Grief can feel isolating, but support is available throughout our region. Whether you are grieving after a death or navigating grief while caring for someone who is still here but changing, connecting with others can help.

Grief support groups offer space to share, listen, learn coping tools, and be reminded that you are not alone. You can search for a nearby GriefShare group at griefshare.org, where groups meet in many communities and welcome people at different points in their grief journey. The Bay Center in Kilmarnock (thebaycenter.org) also offers grief support groups and opportunities for community connection.

Support might also look like calling a friend, speaking with a counselor, joining a caregiver support group, or simply allowing yourself to say, “This is hard.” If grief is coming in waves, you are not failing—you are human.

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Today we celebrate the loyal companions who bring comfort, joy, routine, and unconditional love into so many homes across our community. Dogs have a special way of encouraging us to get outside for a walk, pause for a quiet moment, laugh a little more, and feel a little less alone.

For older adults, caregivers, families, and neighbors, that companionship can be a meaningful part of wellness and connection. Whether your dog is young or old, big or small, a rescue, a working dog, or a beloved family friend, today is a wonderful time to give them an extra scratch behind the ears and celebrate the love they bring to our lives.

Share a photo of your favorite pup in the comments—we’d love to see the dogs who brighten your days!

Asking for support is part of wellness, too.

Whether you are caring for someone, managing changes at home, looking for transportation, trying to understand available services, or feeling unsure where to begin, you do not have to figure everything out alone. One phone call can be a first step toward information, reassurance, and connection.

During National Wellness Month, we encourage older adults, caregivers, and families to remember that support is not a last resort—it is part of living well. Bay Aging can help connect you with caregiver support, transportation, meals, home care, housing resources, health services, and community programs.

If you are not sure what you need, that is okay. Start with one call: 800-493-0238.
