Iran and Oman are pushing a framework deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic, on the condition that military ships be barred from the waterway. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said so on August 26.
Oman has brokered the talks. The current proposal, as Gharibabadi described it, calls for an interim reopening of 30 to 60 days while the parties work out longer-term terms.
Washington has pushed back. The US has not agreed to exclude military ships from the strait, and American naval forces have been operating there since commercial traffic restrictions took effect.
