Showcasing rare and fascinating artifacts spanning 4,000 years of history, the museum offers visitors an immersive and personalized experience with the Bible and its ongoing impact on the world around us. Making its grand opening to the public in November 2017, Museum of the Bible’s 430,000-square-foot building is located just three blocks from the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Since the museum opened, more than 2 million visitors have entered its doors and have had opportunities to engage in educational programs, events, and family activities in addition to exploring its floors and permanent and temporary exhibits.

Blessed Stanley Rother was a Catholic priest from Oklahoma who served as a missionary in Guatemala, helped translate the New Testament into Tz’utujil, and was martyred for his work.

Many American WWII soldiers were issued New Testaments, some with a metal cover. Carried in shirt pockets, they became known as “Heart Shield Bibles.” This copy, No. 818 by Whitman Publishing Company, was given to Major Charles A. Hearn by Lottie Bille, and it’s accompanied by his ID card, signed by issuing officer John Rostic, Major CMP.

It’s a rare chance to see the book and the man who carried it.
