Did you know that the driver shortage is one of the leading issues in the trucking industry in the United States, with an estimated 80,500 drivers needed in 2021. By 2030, this figure is forecast to reach 162,000!!!

GENERAL U.S. TRUCKING INDUSTRY STATISTICS

There are approximately 1.9 million trucking carriers in the U.S.

This number is accurate as of February 2021 and accounts for 996,894 for-hire carriers and 813,440 private carriers. (The additional 83,235 carriers either didn’t specify a segment or checked multiple of them.)

91.5% of trucking carriers in the U.S. operate with six or fewer trucks.

In addition, 97.4% operate with fewer than 20 trucks, showing that the vast majority of U.S. trucking carriers aren’t owned by large companies.

Grocery stores would go out of stock in just three days if trucks stopped driving.

Not only that, but medical supplies, ATM cash, and gas would be in short supply as well. Garbage would pile up, other goods such as clothing would go undelivered, and even water treatment plants wouldn’t have the chemicals they need to make water potable.

According to CNN, the shortage in stores and online is due to truck drivers aging out and not enough new drivers to take their place.

Think about the last time you went grocery shopping and supplies were limited or you found what you needed, but just barely. Our industry is more crucial than many will ever realize.

Random fact of the day:

A typical tractor-trailer or other large truck can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds by law. Most passenger vehicles are about 3,000 – 4,000 pounds. A passenger vehicle weighing 4,000 pounds, traveling under ideal conditions at a speed of 65 miles per hour would take 316 feet to stop (nearly the length of a football field). In comparison, a fully loaded tractor-trailer weighing 80,000 pounds traveling under ideal conditions at a speed of 65 miles per hour will take 525 feet to stop (almost the length of two football fields).

Allow for a safe distance for breaking, but also for visibility.
