Community Baby Shower to Address Vital Needs for New and Expectant Mothers

The Community Action Committee of Pike County (CAC) and Valley View Health Centers (VVHC) is proud to announce a Community Baby Shower on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The event will be held at the Pike County Senior Center, located at 402 Clough Street in Waverly.

This event is specifically designed for expectant mothers and parents with infants under 12 months of age. In Pike County, the need for centralized maternal support is a top priority; according to U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts (2024), approximately 5.9% of the local population consists of children under five, with an estimated 300+ infants born annually in the county. In rural areas, navigating the path to a healthy pregnancy and a stable home can be daunting, making this event a vital "one-stop shop" for local families.

This event is designed to provide an introduction of the VVHC and CAC’s available resources, by utilizing dedicated Community Health Workers and Case Managers eligible mothers and families will receive a step-by-step process to eliminate risks to health and well-being. These experienced program guides are essential for mothers by helping navigate complex systems to secure:

• Pregnancy and family planning support
• Essential baby supplies and nutritious food
• Health insurance and primary care doctors
• Safe, stable housing
• Job training and educational opportunities
• And More…

"This event is an opportunity to show support to the women in our community that are in need of various services and support during the challenging time of pregnancy,” said Michelle Diehl, Chief Operating Officer of the CAC. "By connecting mothers with our Team early on, we can ensure they have the resources they need for them and their babies to thrive. We want the future of Pike County to grow strong and deeply rooted to our community."

Research shows that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are the most critical for long-term brain development and physical health. According to the Ohio Department of Health’s Bureau of Maternal and Child Health, consistent access to prenatal and postpartum care significantly reduces the risk of low birth weight and developmental delays. However, navigating these medical and social systems can be a major barrier for families in rural Appalachia.

By attending this Community Baby Shower, mothers gain an educational foundation where they can learn how to bridge the gap between their current needs and a healthy future. Through the guidance of CHWs and Case Managers, mothers are empowered to take proactive steps—such as establishing a "medical home" with a primary care doctor and securing stable housing—which the March of Dimes identifies as essential "Social Determinants of Health" that directly impact infant mortality rates and maternal well-being.

Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate as vendors to share their resources with attendees. However, table space is strictly limited and is expected to fill quickly.

For more information about the Community Baby Shower or the Pathways Care Services, or register to participate as a vendor, please contact Valerie Gunther directly at (740) 289 – 2371 ext. 7707 or [email protected].

🚨 Community Health Centers Need Your Help — Act Now! 🚨
Federal funding for Community Health Centers (CHCs) is set to expire on January 30, 2026. If Congress does not act, millions of people could lose access to affordable, local healthcare.

Community Health Centers serve 52 million patients every year at more than 17,000 locations across the country. That includes:
👩‍⚕️ 1 in 5 rural Americans
🧑‍⚕️ 1 in 3 people living in poverty
👨‍⚕️ 1 in 5 uninsured individuals
👩‍⚕️Overall, 1 in 7 Americans relies on a CHC for care, including more than 15,000 individuals in our local communities.

CHCs provide primary care, preventive services, behavioral health, and more—regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. They are a lifeline for families, seniors, veterans, and workers in our communities.

Right now, CHC funding is only temporarily covered under a short-term government extension. Congress must pass long-term funding to protect patient access and keep health centers open.

👉 TAKE ACTION TODAY
Please contact your members of Congress and urge them to support stable funding for Community Health Centers, including:
❗️At least $5.8 billion per year for CHCs (for two years)
❗️$950 million per year for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC)
❗️$2.1 billion over five years for the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program
