How We Engrave Monuments and Address Markers
People often ask how lettering and designs are engraved into monuments and address markers. We are also asked whether we perform the work ourselves or send it to a large manufacturer.
The short answer is: We perform our own deep-letter sandblast engraving.
Different Methods of Engraving Stone
Laser Etching
Laser etching has become increasingly popular and works best on black or other very dark granite. Although we do not currently own a laser engraver, we work with trusted businesses that understand our goal of providing quality work at a reasonable price. These relationships allow us to offer laser-etched designs while passing the savings along to our customers.
Hand Carving
Hand carving is a skilled, time-honored craft. Although it is still practiced by some artisans, it is much less common in the monument industry today.
Sandblasting—Our Preferred Method
Sandblasting has been an industry standard for generations and remains our preferred method for creating deep, durable lettering and designs.
The process involves several careful steps:
1. A rubber stencil containing the lettering and design is applied to the stone.
2. The areas to be engraved are “weeded,” meaning those portions of the stencil are carefully peeled away.
3. An abrasive material, such as aluminum oxide, is directed at the exposed stone.
4. The abrasive cuts deep, long-lasting grooves into the granite.
5. The finished engraving is carefully inspected for quality and accuracy.
Sandblasting requires patience, precision, and close attention to detail. A small mistake can happen quickly, so we carefully oversee every step of the process.
At Lifetime Stone Creations, LLC, we take pride in personally creating our deep-letter engravings. Your monument receives the hands-on care and attention it deserves from beginning to end.
