The Latest on SNAP:
Many families will see less than half of their November SNAP benefits.
On Tuesday morning, the USDA released guidance explaining how partial November benefits will be calculated. Their formula will leave many with little to no money on their EBT card this month.
Wait... I Thought Families Would Get 50%?
When the Trump administration agreed to issue partial SNAP benefits for November, many assumed this would mean families would receive 50% of their normal monthly benefit. Instead, the USDA is decreasing the maximum SNAP allotment by half, then calculating benefits as normal using this lower ceiling. With this formula, most SNAP recipients will receive far less than half their normal benefit.
Here's some examples:
Anna is a single mother who works part-time and has two children. She typically receives $502 per month in SNAP benefits. Under the USDA’s current plan, she’ll receive just $110 in benefits for November.
The Rivera family has three children. Their household of five typically receives $640 per month in SNAP benefits. In November, they’ll receive just $49.
Elijah is a single adult who works a seasonal job with variable hours. During the off-season, he receives $140 per month in SNAP benefits to help make ends meet. In November, Elijah will receive just $12 in benefits.
What Happens Now?
The USDA's partial benefit formula will likely be challenged in court, and more information will be available by the end of the week.
Between court proceedings and the time needed for DSHS to recalculate November benefits, SNAP recipients will experience a significant delay in food assistance this month.
This is an ongoing and rapidly evolving situation. Stay up to date with the latest news on our Government Shutdown page.
Take Action Now!
Lawmakers need to hear from you. Let them know that SNAP benefits must be paid in full for the duration of the government shutdown. The USDA has both the funding and the authority to make this a reality - demand that they do so today.
