According to an article in HR Drive, R&L Carriers, an Ohio-based trucking firm, has agreed to pay $1.25 million to a group of female applicants to settle charges of gender discrimination in recruitment between 2010 and 2017. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) claimed that the company violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by refusing to hire women as dockworkers or loaders. R&L Carriers will pay the amount into a fund to compensate unsuccessful female applicants and has agreed to several provisions, including revising job advertisements and recruitment practices, providing Title VII training to hiring staff, and posting a nondiscrimination policy notice. The EEOC has historically targeted firms that discriminate against women or segregate roles based on gender, often resulting in significant settlements. In February 2022, American Freight Management Co. agreed to pay $5 million to settle EEOC accusations of discrimination against women in sales and warehousing professions.
