From Iceland to Yorktown! When a friend’s weekend plans get rained out, you go on a Hamilton side quest of course! Yorktown 1781! Immigrants, we get the job done!

We quietly and undercover ascended redoubt 10 where Hamilton led his men with the bullets out their guns … the code word was Rochambeau! This is the spot where the World Turned Upside Down!

We also went to Williamsburg and Jamestown and completed the full circle (or triangle in this case) from the beginnings of a thought of our nation to where we fought and won our independence! America 250 - Hamilton style! 😉

To stand on the spot where Pocahontas married John Rolfe and to see Jamestown is a pretty moving moment. So much history in this area! It also helps to have a friend who is an archeologist and historian by trade to explain what you’re seeing in depth!

If you haven’t had a chance to visit Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, I cannot recommend it enough! I would be happy to help you discover what you can see and do in this amazing historic triangle.

I’ve been home from Iceland for a few days and hit the ground running to try and catch up from everything I missed while I was gone with family and travel! Fall is BUSY in our house, as it is with most families! So thanks for your patience while I balance being mom, wife, and business owner (and jet lagged)!

Iceland was unreal and amazing and I was excited to see you all following along with my trip! Many of you have asked what my favorite part was and hiking the glacier is top for me, but I also got as excited as a kid on Christmas every time I saw sheep! Poor Melanie, my travel partner, must have thought I was a broken record! Here’s a photo of the back end of a sheep because every time I tried to get a selfie they turned around on me! 🐑

I’m home for a week more before I go into four weeks of solid work travel. Jon is joining me on the Disney Wonder (without the boys) on my first of three back-to-back trips! There may be a Disneyland trip squeezed in there as well! 😉

This week, I have been working on finishing up a customized Japan itinerary for a client, an Ireland trip, an Iceland trip for next summer, an Italy pre-cruise stay, a Celebrity cruise with full excursions and pre and post stays in Spain, lots of Walt Disney World trips, a Universal trip, a Florida summer beach stay, an American Cruise Line trip (which is domestic US river cruising), and a girls Caribbean getaway! I interrupt my Iceland trip posts to share exciting Disney Cruise Line news!

Bookings for the Disney Believe’s inaugural sailings will begin next week! She will begin sailing from Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale on December 18th, 2027! Castaway Club members can begin booking as early as Monday depending on your Castaway level.

Iceland Day 6 - We spent another day exploring Vik and then made our way back to Hella. School bus cafes are a fun thing in South Iceland and today we started the day off at Skool Beans Cafe in Vik which had a great latte and Robert “Brownie” Jr as one of their treats! (See my story for pics)! It was apparently delicious!

We then had a very windy and rainy drive back to Hella, which means when the rain the stopped, rainbows were plentiful! The wind was whisking the waterfalls across the mountainside which was cool to see. We also stopped along the rode at “Bra Fence,” which is exactly what it sounds like. I did not add to the fence on this trip, but the wind was certainly whipping them around and some had taken flight!!🤣🤣

We stopped along the way to Hella to get rainbow and waterfall photos and I also stopped by a farm to meet a new Icelandic horse friend. He wanted to nibble on my hair.

Once we got to Hella, we went on a tour of the Caves of Hella. These caves are over 1000 years old and were made by Celtic settlers before the Vikings even arrived in Iceland. Archeologists believe the first cave we saw was a dining hall and the second cave we explored was their church. It was a very cool experience!

After the caves we went to the American Schoolbus Cafe for a quick hot chocolate and visited with the friendly barista, who is from Romania. If you have ever traveled with me, you know how much I love to talk to the locals. Iceland is so friendly! It’s Midwest Nice! I love it!

Tonight, we are staying in an igloo! I’m so excited! I’m hoping the sky will clear so we can get a great view of the Northern Lights! I will keep posting through the night in my stories! Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Today was day 5 of our Iceland adventure and we decided to make it a quieter day to catch up on work and rest a bit. We spent the day in Vík í Mýrdal (commonly referred to as Vik), a small village in South Iceland.

It’s known for its red-roofed church that sits on top of the hill, Reynisfjara Beach (the famous black sand beach) and the Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks, which have been featured as backdrops in Star Wars Rouge One and Game of Thrones.

We drove through the village, visited the church, stopped into Katla Wool (a small family-owned knitting factory) to purchase some authentic Iceland-wool souvenirs and play with their adorable dog (highlight of my day), had lunch at Black Crust Pizzeria (the black crust is made of activated charcoal), then went to the black sand beach at sunset! The waves from the North Atlantic Ocean are no joke - I have never seen waves slam the beach as hard as these were. This beach is also known to have sneaker waves and can be quite dangerous. We kept our distance but the waves were still pushing far into the shore. It did make for some amazing photos with the sea stacks in the background. We also saw a group of people on a horse back riding tour, which I think would be a spectacular way to see the beach in the summer!

It was a great and relaxing day! Tomorrow we have some more fun adventures planned. Keep your fingers crossed that the skies clear up for us - tomorrow night we have the prime spot for the Northern Lights! 🤞

Today we left Reykjavik and headed to South Iceland! The drive was quite easy as we had great weather! We saw lots of horses and sheep and waterfalls along the way. We stopped to see Skógafoss Waterfall which was pretty spectacular! We had amazing weather which meant rainbows! There was also a sheep farm next to the waterfall, so of course I had to go say hi to my favorite wooly friends!

We made it to Vik and checked into our cabin! It’s quite cozy and awesome! These cabins are perfect for a travelers looking for something different than a hotel!

The true highlight of the day though was the hike to Katla Ice Cave beneath Mýrdalsjökull Glacier! I still can’t believe I climbed a glacier today and then went inside it! Unbelievable! The black you see in the photos is volcanic rock that is embedded into the glacier ice. All of this mountain is actually ice! 🧊 The first photo is me pointing to where I had just hiked to! I can see how mountain climbing can be so much fun now!

Fun side note, movies filmed where I was on the glacier today include Interstellar, Star Wars Rouge One, and the recent Odyssey! They had 800 extras camped out at the bottom of the glacier during the Odyssey filming! I can see why Iceland makes a great backdrop for films!

Tomorrow we are exploring more of South Iceland and hoping for some Northern Lights viewing! We saw a glimpse of them tonight.

Today (Day 3) we did the Golden Circle tour. We started off in Hveragerði at the Sunnumӧrk shopping center which has a tectonic plate fissure running through it. One side is the North American plate and the other side is Europe, so I was standing in two continents at the same time! Stretch those legs! 😂

Next we went to the Kerid Crater, which I climbed to the top of to get the stunning view! It is a deep rich blue/green color and quite cold out .. a nippy 34 degrees! 🥶 The view was worth the climb!

Our next stop was Gullfoss Waterfall which was absolutely stunning. It is part of the glacial Hvítá River and its average flow runs above 100 cubic metres per second - it was very loud! On sunny days it is very common to see rainbows! 🌈 Thankfully today was a super sunny day!

Next up was Geysir, home to the Strokkur geyser at Haukadalur. Every 5-10 minutes it erupts throwing water 50-65 feet into the air! Word of warning - don’t be downwind when it goes off or you will get very wet - don’t ask me how I know! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Our last tour stop was Þingvellir National Park, which is the official end of North American tectonic plate and the home to Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament, which was founded in 930 AD! The tectonic plate is the massive wall and the views of the park in fall look like a painting!

All along the Golden Circle there are farms with sheep and horses doting the countryside! It’s so neat to look out and see them all grazing!

We ended with dinner at Sjávargrillid near the Rainbow Road, an excellent seafood restaurant in Reykjavik.

Tomorrow we head to South Iceland for the next few evenings! Stay Tuned!!

Iceland is even more amazing than I imagined it would be! We started off the trip at Blue Lagoon and after an overnight flight, it was incredibly refreshing! The water is truly that blue and the sky … well it rained for most of the day! In Iceland you never know what the weather will do and we are learning that fast!

After we checked into our hotel we did a walking tour of Reykjavík! It is such a cool town and so easily walkable! The fall colors are still lingering on the trees here! After that we did some shopping and met some of the Cats of Reykjavík. They do belong to people and the owners do come for them at night, but during the day the roam the shops in town. This cat’s name is Volvo! We followed up with dinner at BakaBaka and I had the best gluten free pizza ever! Yum!

We started day 2 off with a trip to the flea market where local artisans set up booths. It’s only open on Saturday and Sunday, so we need to make sure to work this into your trips! It was so worth it! I love knowing my souvenirs were hand made by the folks we met!

We then walked into town to find Rainbow Road and then walked to Hallgrimskirkja, the large church in town which is actually an Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland congregation. I really enjoyed touring the church since my family is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America - so we are part of the same overall governing body. It’s like a sister church for me! Very cool connection!

After our walk we went on a whale watching tour. It was absolutely freezing but we did see Humpback whales and it was so worth the cold! We then went to dinner tonight in a Food Hall, which is like a very high-end food court with a fun, cool atmosphere!

Tomorrow we have a Golden Circle tour - time for Iceland waterfalls!!

Now departing for Iceland! 🇮🇸

Find a friend who loves to travel and explore somewhere new for a weekend! Last weekend (in a nor’easter) one of my besties and I headed up to Boston and Salem and we had THE BEST time! We threw “tea” in the harbor (Huzzah!), we walked the Freedom Trail, went to Beacon Hill and found the most charming bookstore, and went to Salem and did all the witchy things, including making our own brooms! We laughed a lot, we ate too much, we sang in the rain, and had the break that every adult needs! On the way home we made an impromptu stop at the Schuyler Mansion since we were passing Albany and saw the room where Alexander and Eliza were married!

Since we are both history and musical theater nerds we are now going to go to all the places mentioned in the musical Hamilton! Next up, a trip to Weehawken (not at dawn 😉) and NYC to check off some of the Hamilton list with a stop to see Hamilton on Broadway of course!
