Marbella is worth a day. Estepona is worth staying in.
When people picture the Costa del Sol they picture Puerto Banus, the yachts and the supercars. That is genuinely there, and if it is your thing, go look. But Marbella's old town is a normal walkable Andalucian historic center with a locals' beach five minutes from it, and that day cost us about what a beach day costs anywhere.
Estepona was our base and quietly became the favorite. Quieter than Marbella, more lived in, chiringuitos on the sand, and a gelateria we ended up at almost every night.
The last post in the series has the full comparison for anyone deciding where to base themselves, plus the dolphin sail out of Estepona's marina, which was the best single thing we booked.
Part six of six.
