Wheelchair RV Life Hi! My name is Autumn and I've been a wheelchair user since 2009.

I travel all over the US and enjoy reviewing the places I go - both on the overall experience and their accessibility.

We went to Fountain Paint Pots in Yellowstone recently and WOW!

โ™ฟ๏ธ It was very accessible ๐Ÿ™‚, though there was one place with stairs ๐Ÿ˜• - so we went back around and got to the area a different way.

We can't wait to come back next year and see it earlier in the season - it's one of the areas here that changes most seasonally. More info in the captions! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿค“

โ™ฟ๏ธ I'm giving this place an -A in accessibility. There was just one spot with stairs, but was still accessible if you backtracked.

This is one of my favorite places in Yellowstone, and it's not one that people really talk about.

This is Isa Lake, the only one I've seen here with lily pads, and it's completely overrun with them.

The really neat thing, though, is that it sits right on the continental divide. Pretty cool, right? It has two outlets - one goes East and one goes West. That alone is pretty fun, but the best part is that the East one dumps into the Pacific Ocean, and the West one makes its way to the Atlantic. ๐Ÿค”

Both of them take a short detour through the mountain, and cross back the other direction underground. ๐Ÿค“

THE CHANCES OF YOU JOINING THIS โ€œCLUBโ€ AT SOME POINT IN YOUR LIFE ARE EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH. THE MORE EDUCATION YOU HAVE NOW, THE BETTER OFF YOUโ€™LL BE.

PERSONAL STORY:
For me to go on a short walk (or roll, in my scooter) with David, my scooter gets entirely loaded up โ€” from the pockets on the back of the seat to the basket filled with TETRIS-LIKE PRECISION. Then David carries a small backpack.

Thatโ€™s just to go on a walk.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆผ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ
An overnight trip means very careful planning for the days before and after โ€” for preparation and recovery โ€” and the entire car has to be packed with TETRIS-LIKE PRECISION. Once the car is filled, I canโ€™t reach the things I need when I need them, so we constantly have to pull over to dig through it all.

โ™ฟ๏ธ๐Ÿ›ฌ
Many years ago, I flew to see family in Arizona. There was no way I could take everything I needed. I planned carefully: what I needed for the flight, plus the most expensive or unique items. Once I arrived, we had to go straight to a store to buy the rest.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆฝ๐Ÿ›Œ๐Ÿ˜ฐ
THIS CAUSES QUITE THE DOMINO EFFECT IN EVERYDAY LIFE. LETโ€™S LOOK AT SOME OF THOSE DOMINOES:

1๏ธโƒฃ GETTING READY TAKES TIME: In situations where you might just walk out the door, I need at least 30 minutes.

๐Ÿฅ„๐Ÿฅ„๐Ÿฅ„
2๏ธโƒฃ EVERYTHING TAKES MORE ENERGY: Simple things take me more work, and I start with less energy to begin with.

โฒ๏ธโณ๏ธโฐ๏ธ
3๏ธโƒฃ IT TAKES EXTRA TIME: I already need extra time for necessary care at home, so every task adds up.

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿšง๐Ÿ›Œ
4๏ธโƒฃ SIMPLE TASKS ARE HARDER: Even a quick drink of water means working through that Tetris pile in my basket โ€” lifting it out, putting it back.

๐Ÿ˜ž๐Ÿฅฑ๐Ÿ˜ซ
5๏ธโƒฃ EXISTING IN AN ABLEIST SOCIETY: From lack of accessibility to details others donโ€™t see, the world isnโ€™t designed for people like me.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ
6๏ธโƒฃ IT IMPACTS CAREGIVERS TOO: If David works even part time, he has next to no free time. He snags a few minutes here and there, often at the cost of something else not getting done. Even at night, heโ€™s up multiple times to care for me. Medicare doesnโ€™t pay him for any of it.

๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿชฆ
7๏ธโƒฃ THE MOST PAINFUL DOMINO: The way our society devalues disabled lives. Iโ€™ve lost count of how many times people have said โ€” or implied โ€” that caring for me is a waste of time and money. THIS IS EUGENICS IN ACTION: the idea that some lives are worth less, a mindset that has justified countless atrocities.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆผ๐Ÿงถโœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“–
During times like these โ€” when assistance programs lose funding โ€” this gets worse. Iโ€™ve spent my life trying to compensate. During the pandemic I made hundreds of paintings with thank-you notes for essential workers. When I lived in Portland, I gave out over 300 handmade gifts each Christmas to veterans and people without housing.

I SHOULDNโ€™T HAVE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE ABLEISM AROUND ME. But I do, because it makes my life easier. And because everything I do takes more time, people often value the products less โ€” seeing it through ableist eyes. A single postcard might take me 20 minutes to create, plus another 20 minutes to recover.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿฆฏ๐Ÿฆฏ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆฏ
SO PLEASE, REMEMBER ALL THIS WHEN YOU SEE SOMEONE USING A CANE, A WHEELCHAIR, OR SIMPLY BEHAVING DIFFERENTLY.

๐Ÿ™ IF THEY TAKE TIME OUT OF THEIR LIFE TO DO SOMETHING FOR YOU, PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE ENORMOUS COST โ€” AND THE ENORMOUS GIFT โ€” THEYโ€™RE GIVING YOU. ๐ŸŽ

Yesterday (June 30) we went to the artist paint pots. I kept wanting to go last year, and this year we made it ๐Ÿ˜

Not very much of it was accessible, though. ๐Ÿ™ Just a short path before it ran into stairs. There was a whole series of short paths in that region, and I went down every single one of them. In the end, though, the main path had the only real sights to see.

As always -
There's captions on the pictures and videos will be posted separate. ๐Ÿ™‚

We went for a short roll this afternoon and got caught in a storm ๐Ÿ’จ๐ŸŒง

My mobility scooter was clearly not designed by anyone who actually uses them - none of the electronics are sealed, so it's the first sign of rain I have to grab a garbage bag & put it over the handlebars, then an umbrella to cover the rest, and go full speed until I get undercover.

The wind had other ideas. ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆฝ๐Ÿ˜… as I was crossing one of the roads, it decided to snap back on me and nearly pulled me backwards with it! David took it and I sped on. I'm glad I was in a mobility scooter and not a manual wheelchair - though that could have been entertaining in its own right. ๐Ÿ˜‚

We got home, parked the scooter, brought everything inside...
and it stopped raining ๐ŸŒฅ๐Ÿคฃ
Well, at least the mosquitoes weren't a problem for David (they never are for me.)

We went to the West Thumb Basin in Yellowstone. More people have died here than anywhere else in the park, almost always because they stepped off the boardwalk and fell in the hydrothermal area. Because of the way that bacterial mats form, the ground might be a few feet deep, but it might also be half an inch thick - and there's no way to know. The water just beneath can reach temperatures of 213-218ยฐF (101-103ยฐC)

The first couple pictures are from just down the road from our camp.

David finally worked a regular shift today, so we took a walk in the Upper Geyser Basin to celebrate ๐Ÿฅณ Enjoy!
