Tuesday began like any other, but by afternoon, torrential rains had devastated the Georges Creek Valley. The towns of Lonaconing and Westernport were especially hard hit, as the “Crik” overflowed its banks, flooding streets, homes, and schools. The impact on these communities has been profound. Other areas, including Midland and Barton, also experienced serious flooding.
The Georges Creek Division Railroad, which had recently cleared the right-of-way between Barton and Westernport, suffered significant track damage in that stretch by Tuesday evening. Bridges, crossings, ROW, and several miles of track were impacted by the quick moving water.
Despite the setback, GCK remains committed to revitalizing the valley through passenger service, recreational access, and freight operations as opportunities arise.
The flood didn’t end the dream—it only raised the stakes. We will share updates on the physical impact to the railroad and our future plans.
Please keep the affected families in your prayers as we begin to assess the damage and continue building our future in the Georges Creek region.
Thank you.
