took a while but we finally found the culprit. wound up being bearing material from the original starter sprague clutch system. we replaced that starter a few weeks ago due to it failing but i did not see that the clutch system was bad. owner still had the starter so we were able to track it down.

BOLO information for local pilots. one of my customers hit a goose this morning. Make sure to keep your eyes out for the wildlife on and around the airfield. This includes the geese, wild turkey, deer, sometimes elk and the occasional domesticated cow and horses that get through the neighbors fences.

Cessna 206 annual with IO-550 conversion. Note missing nuts on the studs. One of the nuts is laying on the engine below the studs. Those studs not only hold the induction bracket in place, but they also bolt in the idler gear support pin. If this was any other model 550 with different induction system that pin could back out letting loose the idler gear and therefore having a very bad day for the pilot. The main reason I found this was tracking down an oil leak. Which happens to be coming out of that pin.

Final follow up on the GSM gascolator. GSM contacted me after Aircraft Spruce pulled his product.

After discussing my issues we agreed that he would no longer manufacture his Piper style gascolator and that he would send me his current inventory to destroy. He can still make his other “side mount” style gascolator since I do not have gascolator design like that one. The only other thing i asked was not to annodize the parts gold, wich he agreed to and will change the color to durthwr differentiate his product from mine.

I received his stock Friday. Pictures in this post with description of my thoughts.

Yes it is slightly different than my parts. However, at first glance you cannot tell which is my product and wich is his.

One thing I can say about this situation is that GSM was willing to work out a compromise with me and not have any issues in the future. His machining looks nice, and it looks like a good product. However being for homebuild only and not FAA cetified I am not sure on his tolerances.

Thanks for all your support.

In regard to the Gascolator listing on ACS I got this E-Mail from Jim Irwin (Aircraft Spruce president)

Hi Steve,

Our marketing department saw your Facebook posting regarding the GSM gascolator, and I want to apologize for our taking on this product. We get a large volume of new products presented to us every month, and our team thought that this was simply a new product for the homebuilt market which would not conflict with your STC’d gascolators. We had nothing to do with the development or production of this gascolator, and added it as a new product without physically evaluating the product. We are removing the gascolator from our website immediately and will not offer it going forward. We have not sold any of this product to date.

I did e-mail back thanking him for their continued support
