Difficult conversations are just that. Difficult. Avoiding having that conversation doesn't make it easier and the problem doesn't go away. It continues to fester.

Employees who are chronically absent, tardy, not team players, subpar performers, etc. don't just wake up one morning and magically transform because the employer wishes it so. Having a poor performer is a drag on the entire organization and changes the workplace culture for the worse.

Small issues that could have been dealt with early on turn into a crisis later because the employer wanted to hope for the best. Management must be active and can't rely on "hope" to get the work done. Work with a trusted HR professional or an employment attorney on how to handle these conversations.

Be available. That means - answer the phone. Yes, I know we all get pesky scam calls, but when in the market for a new job, the phone must be answered. Can't answer the call? First - set up voicemail. Second - listen to the voicemail. In my opinion nothing says "nonprofessional" like getting an immediate callback with "someone called this number." Get a text from a potential employer wanting to set up an interview? Respond. Keep in mind, if we can't get in contact with someone, we will move on to a more responsive candidate. Candidate responsiveness is part of the interview process.

Get a text from the employer attempting to answer questions? Look at the text. Respond. I've had so many employees with HR related questions that I can't connect with because I have been told later "I don't check my notifications on my phone." If that is the case, I will never understand why our eyes are never off the devices constantly in our hands.

Be available. Be responsive. If we aren't willing to use a world of communication from a device that fits in our hands, what's the preferred method of communication? Carrier pigeon? Smoke signal?

Keep the anger and disappointment in check if you aren't willing to meet someone halfway by simply answering.
