Would you move aside for a stranger without being asked? A Japanese couple quietly did exactly that, and their simple gesture touched millions online.

Tourist and content creator Abdullah Ghazanfar was travelling on a Shinkansen bullet train in Japan when he spotted a beautiful view of Mount Fuji through the window.

As he lifted his phone to take a photo, the Japanese couple sitting near the window noticed what he was trying to capture. Without Ghazanfar asking them to move or saying a word, the couple gently ducked forward in their seats, clearing his view of the iconic mountain.

The small moment was captured on video and later shared online, where it quickly gained millions of views. People from around the world appreciated the couple’s thoughtful gesture and the effortless kindness behind it.

Ghazanfar also highlighted that he never asked them to duck down. They simply noticed that he wanted a clear photo and made space for him.

The moment is being widely appreciated as an example of Japanese courtesy and consideration, often associated with the idea of omotenashi—being mindful of other people’s needs and making them feel comfortable.

Sometimes, kindness does not need a conversation or a grand gesture. A small movement at the right moment can make someone’s day—and this wholesome Mount Fuji train moment is a beautiful reminder of that.

Beneath the surface of our ocean, seas, rivers and lakes lies an extraordinary part of humanity's cultural heritage, from ancient shipwrecks and submerged settlements to archaeological sites and living traditions and knowledge connected to water.

Often unseen and difficult to access, this heritage bears witness to centuries of voyages, exchanges and shared histories. Yet it is increasingly vulnerable to looting, illicit trafficking, climate change, pollution and other growing pressures.

On 21 August, the first International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage calls for stronger international cooperation to protect this irreplaceable source of knowledge and intercultural dialogue, and to ensure that its protection is fully integrated into the sustainable management of oceans, coastal areas and inland waters.

This year also marks 25 years since the adoption of UNESCO's 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, which provides a framework for international cooperation, responsible research and the protection of submerged heritage from commercial exploitation and illicit trafficking.

Together with Member States, researchers, local communities and partners, UNESCO is working to safeguard for the benefit of humanity and future generations.

Edwin Castro, who won the record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot in November 2022, is using part of his fortune to help rebuild homes in Altadena, California, the community where he grew up.

Castro bought his winning ticket at an Altadena gas station. After the devastating Eaton Fire in January 2025 destroyed thousands of homes, he began buying fire-damaged properties in the area.

He has spent about $10 million buying 15 lots and plans to build single-family Craftsman-style homes. His goal is to have families who want to live in the homes become the owners, rather than selling them to investors or landlords.

“This is for a family that wants to move in... I'm not building these homes just to give them away,” Castro said. He also added, “the profit margin doesn't need to be egregious.”

By May 2026, two of the homes were already under construction. Castro is also reportedly donating three of his properties to the Greenline Housing Foundation, a nonprofit that helps people with down payments.

The project has received mixed reactions from local residents. Some people welcome Castro’s investment and the new homes it could bring. Others worry about gentrification and outside investors buying property in Altadena, a community with a long history of Black homeownership.

Castro’s project is therefore not only about rebuilding houses. It has also started a larger conversation about who will own the rebuilt homes and how Altadena’s community will change after the fire.
