We are so excited to support our partners at the Discovery Museum as they bring the thrill of aviation to downtown Wi******er! 😍🚁

Our helicopter is in WI******ER, VIRGINIA!!! 🚁 It traveled over 2,800 miles all the way from San Juan Island, Washington- that's a really long way!

Continuing the historic capital investment in the Wi******er Regional Airport, the Wi******er Regional Airport Authority (“Authority”) received a grant by the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) in the amount of $2,196,225. The grant will fund site improvements on a 30-acre tract of land that has received significant interest and can support a wide variety of potential uses including hangar storage, maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, advanced air mobility (AAM), and aircraft assembly and flight-testing operations. The grant was awarded at the quarterly meeting of the Virginia Aviation Board (VAB) held on August 21, 2026 in Williamsburg, Virginia.

The project prepares the airport for future development by clearing trees, mitigating environmental issues, and grading the parcel to near finished floor elevation. All utilities are already in place, and a related project will add a vehicle entrance, making the site essentially “shovel ready” once the work is complete.

“When used effectively, grants are strategic investments that can enhance the airport’s capability, attract meaningful jobs, diversify the regional tax base, and grow the aviation industry in the Commonwealth,” says Authority Chairman Bill Pifer. “We appreciate our partnership with the DOAV and their support of our economic development goals,” he added.

The grant covers 90% of total project costs and the remaining 10% will be funded out of Authority revenues. The low bidder was Clarke County-based Brute LLC. Work is expected to begin in fall 2026.

Wi******er Regional Airport Authority (“Authority”) Chairman Bill Pifer was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for the Washington Airports Task Force (WATF). The Washington Airports Task Force (WATF) is a Virginia 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation headed by regional and corporate leaders dedicated to expanding and enhancing aviation services in Virginia and the National Capital Region to stimulate job creation and economic expansion. Bill has served as Chairman of the Authority since 2021 and has served on the Board as a representative from the City of Wi******er since 2012.

Additionally, Bill’s professional background includes service as a Congressional Chief of Staff, campaign management at both the state and federal levels, and extensive experience as a real estate investor in Virginia and North Carolina. “Bill’s experience in aviation, regional leadership, and public service will be a tremendous asset to the Task Force as we continue advancing our mission of strengthening aviation and economic growth throughout the National Capital Region and the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said WATF President Keith Meurlin.

One priority of the WATF is to promote Region-Wide Economic Development, and it is an area that Bill feels he can make meaningful contributions towards. “The Wi******er Regional Airport has undergone historic growth recently and is at the forefront of conversations about regional connectivity, aviation service delivery, and aerospace workforce development,” Bill said. “The Authority is a logical partner for WATF as it advances Virginia’s robust airport system - led by Dulles and National - to promote economic and social benefits across the Commonwealth. I am honored to join the board.”
