The tariff story just got a new chapter — and this one runs in both directions. 🇨🇦

Canada is set to roll out retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on U.S. imports starting September 8, matching U.S. rates on goods including steel, dairy, appliances, and agricultural equipment. For companies importing steel and aluminum already navigating Section 232, the cash-flow math is getting harder to ignore.

This is exactly the environment where a Foreign Trade Zone earns its keep. At our Belvidere, IL facility operating under FTZ #176, imported inventory can sit without clearing customs at the port — meaning tariffs are deferred until product actually ships into U.S. commerce. July was forecast to be the biggest import month in U.S. history — 2.47 million TEU, topping the record set in May 2022.

Now look at what comes next in the same forecast: August down 4.5%, September down 5.7%, October down 3.8%, November down 5.2%.

Domestic intermodal volumes grew nearly 13% year over year in June — and this summer's numbers beat last year's actual peak season. J.B. Hunt says truck-to-rail conversion is running at levels it hasn't seen in more than a decade, with intermodal pricing roughly 30% below truckload on a contract basis.

One line in the piece stood out to us: the risk isn't the railroad. It's the connective tissue around it. Drayage is tight, and transloading is a pinch point in a lot of markets.

That's the part people underestimate until they're living it. Rail economics only work if freight can actually come off the car and onto a truck without sitting.

The Logistics Managers' Index hit 71.1 in June — the first reading above 70 since March 2022. But the number worth your attention is this one: warehousing capacity slid back into contraction while utilization climbed to its highest point since 2022.

Translation: space is filling faster than it's being built. New warehouse deliveries are tracking toward the lowest level in a decade, and rents turned positive again in Q1 after two years of softening.

That's a tough combination if you're the one making the call in Q4.
