Does It Make the Aviator More Capable?

That should be one of the questions we ask about every piece of equipment we put into military aviation.

Does it help the aviator perform better?

Hydration, fatigue, cognitive workload, bladder urgency, heat, nutrition, and physical stress all compete for the same human being we expect to operate increasingly complex aircraft in increasingly demanding environments.

The objective of human performance technology should be simple. Reduce the physiological burden placed on the aviator so more capacity remains available for the mission.

If an aviator can remain properly hydrated, reduce unnecessary cockpit distractions, stay focused on the aircraft, and maintain physiological readiness throughout a long mission, we have improved more than comfort.

We have improved capability.

The next generation of military aviation innovation cannot focus exclusively on making aircraft more capable.
We also have to make the human operating the aircraft more capable.

Holding It Is Not a Mission Requirement

Every aviator knows the feeling. You are hours into a mission. You need bladder relief, but the timing is terrible.

So you wait.

Sometimes for hours.

For decades, military aviators have treated this as simply another part of flying. But bladder urgency is more than an inconvenience. It can become another physiological distraction competing for attention during the mission.

And when routinely delaying bladder relief becomes standard operating behavior across years of flying, we should at least question why we continue accepting it.

Modern aviation is built around eliminating unnecessary risk. We improve helmets. Survival equipment. Oxygen systems. Ejection seats. Displays. Restraints. Flight controls. We mandate the use of fire protection, G-suits, and Life Support Systems. We provide the tools for the aviator's success.

We should bring that same mindset to human physiology.

The objective is not simply comfort.

It is allowing aviators to hydrate normally, manage basic physiological needs, remain focused on the aircraft, and finish the mission without intentionally fighting their own bodies.

Holding it should never be part of the mission plan.

What Happens When Tactical Dehydration Becomes a Habit?

One flight is one thing. Years of intentionally limiting fluids is another.

For generations, military aviators have adjusted hydration around the realities of the cockpit. Drink less before the flight. Avoid fluids during the mission. Hold your bladder until landing.

Eventually, a workaround can become a habit.

The conversation about tactical dehydration should not stop with today's sortie. We should also be asking what repeated behaviors may mean over an entire flying career. Hydration supports normal kidney and urinary function, while regularly delaying bladder relief can place unnecessary stress on the urinary system.

Human performance is not simply about getting through today's mission. It is about keeping aviators healthy, capable, and mission ready for the thousands of flight hours that may follow.

We should not accept unhealthy behaviors simply because previous generations of aviators had limited alternatives.

Take care of the aviator today so they are ready for the missions ahead.

Hydration Begins Before You Step to the Aircraft

Mission preparation starts hours before engine start. We plan fuel. Review weather. Study threats. Brief contingencies. Inspect equipment.

The aviator deserves the same preparation.

Hydration is not something that can always be corrected once the mission begins. Starting a demanding flight already dehydrated means beginning the mission with a physiological disadvantage.

That becomes even more important during long sorties, hot weather operations, multiple flights, heavy flight equipment, or missions where access to fluids and bladder relief may be limited.

Student Aviators learn to fly in 1 to 2 hour sorties. Historically, some aviators tried to solve the bladder problem by limiting fluids before flight. Drink less. Relieve less.

Modern aviation should be looking for ways to remove that compromise. As you gain experience and higher qualifications/upgrades, your sortie length and difficulties only grow.

✈️ Prepare the aircraft.

☁️ Prepare the mission.

When Workload Goes Up, Human Performance Should Matter The Most!

Military aviation rarely gives you the luxury of dealing with one problem at a time. Weather deteriorates. Radios get busy. Systems fail. Fuel gets tight. Headache. Neck/back pain. The mission changes.

And the pilot still has to fly the aircraft.

Every additional demand consumes attention and increases cognitive workload. That makes eliminating unnecessary physiological distractions even more important.

Fatigue, dehydration, hunger, heat, stress, back/neck pain, and bladder urgency can all compete for the same finite resource: the aviator's attention.

We cannot eliminate every source of stress in military aviation. But we can work to eliminate the ones we can control. Preparing the human for the mission means giving the aviator every possible physiological advantage before the workload begins to climb.

Better preparation creates more capacity to handle the unexpected.

We need to start planning today to reduce the physiological burden on the human. The jet should be designed around the human and not the other way around!

You Cannot Outfly Fatigue

Military aviation demands performance when the body would sometimes rather be doing literally anything else.

Early briefs. Late recoveries. Night operations. Long sorties. Multiple flights. Changing time zones. Multiple reiterations of BFM/Merge. Flying is a whole-body activity!

Fatigue is part of aviation, but accepting degraded performance does not mean we should ignore the factors we can control.

Sleep, hydration, nutrition, physical conditioning, and recovery all contribute to an aviator's ability to remain alert, process information, make decisions, and respond when the mission changes.

We spend enormous resources improving sensors, displays, weapons, and aircraft performance. Human performance deserves the same attention.

The goal is not simply to complete the mission. The goal is to give the aviator every possible physiological advantage from engine start through shutdown.

Mission readiness requires human readiness.
