Forsyth County is excited about the possibility of bringing advanced air mobility (AAM) to life in North Carolina through the Next in Flight, First in Health eVTOL Integration Pilot Program application. If selected by the FAA, this pilot program would establish smarter connections, develop stronger healthcare support, and improve life-saving operations in the state and surrounding region. Over the past six years, the County has positioned itself to be a leader in the emerging AAM industry by developing a Strategic Plan in 2020 and continuing to support UAS activity.

Smith Reynolds Airport Announces Temporary Control Tower Closure for Major Renovation Project

Winston-Salem, N.C. — Smith Reynolds Airport will temporarily close its air traffic control tower beginning March 9, 2026, for a planned 63-day renovation project aimed at modernizing and improving the facility. During this period, the airport will remain open, and pilots will be notified of operational changes through NOTAMs (Notice to Air Missions). Because the FAA equipment room must be shut down during construction, the airport’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) will be unavailable for the duration of the project. However, pilots may check conditions each day for visual and other approaches such as RNAV (Area Navigation) and GPS.

Last year, Forsyth County was notified that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) intends to fund the tower renovation through the FY 2025 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) FAA Contract Tower (FCT) Program. Smith Reynolds Airport was selected as one of only 20 airports in 15 states to receive funding from the highly competitive $20 million FY 2025 allocation.

The airport’s award of $2 million is the largest amount granted to any airport on the list, reflecting the FAA’s recognition of the project’s importance and the facility’s regional significance. This investment will support critical upgrades including a new HVAC system, roof replacement, tower window improvements, and additional renovations designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and long-term functionality. The tower project was not included in the County’s $12 million Terminal Renovation Project, completed in August 2025, making this federal support especially impactful.
The FAA has emphasized that the purpose of this funding is “to sustain, construct, repair, improve, modernize, replace or relocate airport-owned towers and install communications equipment.” Demand for these funds far exceeded availability, with 62 other airports with sponsor-owned towers competing for support. Smith Reynolds Airport’s selection underscores the strength of the project and its value to the national aviation system.

Airport officials appreciate the community’s patience during the temporary tower closure and look forward to reopening a modernized, more resilient facility that will serve Forsyth County and the region for decades to come.
