🫏🚨 Meet the Herd day 4: Kevin. Yes, Just Kevin. 🚨🫏
We’ve introduced you to some of our big, beautiful draft horses. Horses with majestic names, impressive strength, and incredible stories. Today, we’d like you to meet Kevin.
Just Kevin. Kevin is a donkey.
Kevin is also, without question, the loudest, sassiest, most opinionated creature to ever set four hooves on this property. Kevin would like everyone to know that HE IS IN CHARGE HERE. The horses haven’t officially voted on this arrangement, but they’re all too afraid of him to object.
Kevin came into our lives as part of a rescue deal involving a pregnant mare. You see, Kevin was completely and hopelessly in love with her, and separating the two apparently resulted in a full-scale emergency broadcast.
So, naturally, they came as a package deal.
When Kevin arrived, he was underweight, his hooves were severely overgrown, and we were told he was “trained.”
Now, we’d like to clarify what trained apparently meant. Could you put a halter on Kevin? Absolutely. Could you actually lead Kevin somewhere? Well, You weren’t so much leading Kevin as you were accompanying him on whatever journey he had already decided to take.
Underneath all that attitude was a little donkey who needed some serious care, patience, and a safe place to call home.
He found it, and made himself very comfortable…
First, let’s discuss the noise. We’re not talking about your typical, adorable little donkey bray. We’re talking NUCLEAR AIR RAID SIREN levels of noise.
To all of our neighbors, we’d like to take this opportunity to formally apologize. We promise nobody is being murdered. Nobody is in danger. And no, the barn is not collapsing. That’s just Kevin.
Kevin has a strict schedule, and he expects everyone to follow it.
Breakfast is four minutes late?
🚨 KEVIN.
Dinner hasn’t arrived at the exact moment he expected it?
🚨 KEVIN.
A carriage goes by on the trail without acknowledging his existence?
🚨 KEVIN.
A person, horse, vehicle, or suspicious-looking object enters his line of sight?
Believe it or not, also 🚨KEVIN🚨.
He has VERY strong opinions, and unfortunately for everyone within a five-mile radius, he believes those opinions deserve to be heard.
Then there’s the attitude. Despite being the smallest equine on the property, Kevin has absolutely no idea that he’s small. Our enormous draft horses, some weighing around 2,500 pounds, have learned that when Kevin wants the oats or hay, it’s probably best to move along. Imagine being a massive draft horse and getting bullied away from your dinner by a donkey named Kevin. But that’s Kevin. Small body, enormous ears and an absolutely astronomical ego.
Over time, with proper care, patience, and a whole lot of negotiating, Kevin has gained weight( maybe too much), gotten his hooves back into shape, and even learned how to be led like a respectable member of society. Well… mostly. He CAN walk on a lead rope now. He just doesn’t particularly understand why it’s necessary. Kevin much prefers following us around the property on his own terms, supervising whatever we’re doing and making sure nobody forgets that he’s the most important employee here.
When we first agreed to take Kevin, the plan was simple. “We’ll get him healthy, work with him, and find him a really good home.” That was the plan. A perfectly reasonable plan. Then Kevin started greeting everyone, following us around, screaming at passing carriages and demanding his meals with the precision of a very angry alarm clock.
But somehow, without any of us quite realizing when it happened, the conversation changed from…“We’ll find Kevin a good home.” To…“Kevin is staying. Kevin is never leaving.” ❤️ And just like that, we became the permanent employees of a small, loud, extremely demanding donkey.
Kevin may not pull a carriage. He may not know how to use his inside voice. And he certainly doesn’t believe rules apply to him.
Yet, underneath all that sass is a little rescue donkey who deserved a second chance just as much as any of our big horses.
He’s healthy, he’s happy, he’s loved, and he’ll never have to worry about where he belongs again. Sometimes the animals you never planned on keeping are the ones you can’t imagine living without. We thought we were rescuing Kevin. Turns out, Kevin was acquiring property, staff, a personal chef, and an entire herd of draft horses to supervise. Apparently, we’re all just supposed to be grateful for the opportunity.
We love you, Kevin. Even if the neighbors don’t. 🫏❤️
