Find the Sweet Spot of Your Engine

We know you’ve heard this time and again, slow down to get better fuel mileage, but it’s not that simple. Getting the best fuel mileage means finding that sweet spot – the best RPM to run your engine so it’s the most efficient. And with fuel costs consistently ranking as driver’s number one expense, it's important you know how to find the engine's sweet spot to save money on fuel costs.

The trick is to pull your load with torque and not horsepower, and using energy in the right way. When you pull with horsepower, you use more energy, and therefore burn more fuel to pull your load.

Torque helps sustain speed when towing or maxing out your vehicle’s cargo capacity—especially in maintaining speed going uphill. If you know there’s a hill ahead, gain speed before you climb it. It will prevent you from shifting gears to get up the hill, using more horsepower.

Your dealer states peak horsepower and peak torque at specific RPM for each engine. Even though the RPM varies, we consistently found somewhere between 1250 - 1350 RPM is the magic number. The number not to exceed is 1500 RPM.

We aren’t telling you how fast you should drive, but if you want to save on fuel - finding the engine's sweet spot can leave a sweet amount of savings in your checking account.

Try monitoring your truck tire pressure

According to the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) of the American Trucking Associations, under-inflation of just 10 PSI reduces fuel economy by 1% and increases fuel costs.
And a constant 20% under-inflation in a commercial vehicle tire increases tread wear by 25% and reduces the tire lifetime by 30%. This results in significant increase in tire costs for a fleet.

Operation Safe Driver Week

Drivers ought to be aware that law enforcement officers will be paying even closer attention than normal to how truckers and others drive.

This year’s Operation Safe Driver Week will take place July 11-17 with an emphasis on speeding. During the week police will be on the lookout for commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in risky driving behaviors in or around a commercial motor vehicle. Identified unsafe drivers will be pulled over and issued a citation or warning.

The week is organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

In addition to speeding, law enforcement personnel will be tracking other dangerous driver behaviors throughout the week, such as reckless or aggressive driving, distracted driving, following too closely, improper lane change, failure to obey traffic control devices, failure to use a seat belt, evidence of drunk or drugged driving, etc.
