❄️ Winter Driving Season Is Here. Safety Starts with Preparation. ❄️
Winter weather can change quickly, and a little preparation now can make all the difference later. Don't wait until you're sitting on the side of the road waiting for a wrecker. Take time to inspect your equipment, stock essential supplies, and prepare for challenging conditions before they happen.
Before you hit the road:
✅ Stock your truck with nonperishable food, water, blankets, gloves, extra clothing, and other emergency supplies
✅ Treat fuel or use blended fuel to help prevent gelling, and drain water separators when needed
✅ Check batteries, electrical connections, belts, and alternator performance
✅ Inspect tires for proper tread and air pressure, and ensure chains are available where required
✅ Check brakes, drain air tanks daily, and service air dryers to prevent moisture buildup
✅ Top off fluids, including winter-grade windshield washer fluid and coolant rated for colder temperatures
✅ Inspect hoses, belts, lights, mirrors, and other critical equipment
✅ Carry sand or kitty litter for extra traction if you become stuck
When you're on the road:
• Slow down and increase following distance
• Keep your lights on to improve visibility
• Avoid using cruise control in slippery conditions
• Clear snow and ice from lights, windows, mirrors, and other safety equipment
• Watch for icy roads. If the pavement appears wet but there's no road spray, assume it could be ice
• Be mindful of strong crosswinds, especially when roads are slick
• Monitor weather and road conditions along your route and stay in communication with dispatch if plans need to change
• Keep snow clear from your exhaust when parked
Most importantly: If conditions become unsafe, park it. No load is worth risking your safety.
