Betty Soo with Special Guest James McMurtry

“Simply magical. Definitely worth a view and listen.” Charlie Rattigan, WCTV, Co-Director

ABOUT Betty Soo: It’s the voice that gets you first.

“Betty Soo may well have the most gorgeous voice in Texas …if not in all contemporary folk – its purity and strength can be downright devastating.” – ACOUSTIC GUITAR

BettySoo’s vocal prowess is a thing of wonder. A world-class instrument of deft phrasing and purity, a voice that knows when to hold back and when to dive in. At her own live shows, taking a verse onstage with friends or singing harmonies in sessions with Austin’s finest, BettySoo sings with consummate loveliness and self-assurance. A voice that knows the roots of American music inside and out; coming from a most unexpected place.

James McMurtry is an American rock and folk rock/americana singer, songwriter, guitarist, bandleader, and occasional actor (Daisy Miller, Lonesome Dove, and narrator of Ghost Town: 24 Hours in Terlingua). He performs with veteran bandmates Daren Hess, Cornbread and Tim Holt.

His father, novelist Larry McMurtry, gave him his first guitar at age seven. His mother, an English professor, taught him how to play it: “My mother taught me three chords and the rest I just stole as I went along. I learned everything by ear or by watching people.”

**The Briefing: State & Local Legislative Update**

A lot is unfolding in the legislative process right now.

This week highlighted: big policy ambitions meeting fiscal reality. House Ways & Means dug further into the details of its income tax overhaul, while the Senate scaled back its major housing production bill after the Administration acknowledged it couldn’t support a key pilot program.

At the same time, a technical drafting issue nearly disrupted Vermont’s municipal financing framework.

And now, the Senate is squarely at the center of what’s shaping up to be the defining debate of the session: education reform.

Earlier this month, hosted Professor Thomas Hubka for a fascinating presentation, “How the Working-Class Home Became Modern,” recorded on April 21, 2026.

His talk explored how shifts in the working class—industrialization, changing family roles, and evolving expectations of comfort—reshaped the design of everyday homes.

These changes still impact us today, influencing everything from open floor plans to modern kitchens and the way we balance work and home life.

It’s a powerful reminder that the spaces we live in reflect broader social and economic changes—and continue to shape how we live, work, and connect.
