A truck’s gross vehicle weight limit is 80,000 pounds, which includes the mass of both the cab and the trailer. For single-axle trucks, the limit is 20,000 pounds, and for tandem-axle loads, it’s 34,000 pounds.

According to the American Trucking Associations, semis move 10.5 billion tons of freight each year. To do this, the U.S. needs about 3.6 million Class 8 heavy-duty trucks and more than 3.5 million drivers.

In 2018, trucks hauled about 11.5 billion tons of cargo, which represents about 71 percent of the total domestic tonnage shipped for the year.
