Yakima, it's time! πŸš‹πŸ“ˆ

Time for these beloved trolleys to take the next step. Time for the museum and the streetcars to realize their full potential: A source of pride for our community. An engine of economic development for the Valley. A place to bring your kids and run into neighbors. An incredibly significant historic site that more of America deserves to see.

The last six months have been full of incredible grassroots energy and momentum for the trolleys. Community members showing up when it mattered. Over 500 Trolley Angels, many in Yakima and Selah, but also spanning the globe. New faces at our volunteer events, new riders, fresh faces on the board.

Now, Yakima Valley Trolleys is hiring an Executive Director β€” someone with the passion, the fundraising experience, and the build-it mindset to help us grow into our full potential.

If you know someone who'd be a great fit β€” a neighbor, a former colleague, a Yakima local who's been waiting for the right mission to come along β€” please share this post. The right person is almost certainly within a few connections of someone reading this!

SPARKY SIGHTED! Sparky, the trolley barn cat, likes to live a very secluded life! (S)he wisely moves around when she curls up to go to sleep, so that predators won't know from one night to the next where she is sleeping!
I've been wanting to get a picture of her for a long time. I was parked in my car by the trolley barn the other day. Sparky didn't know that I was in my car as she slinked past. I grabbed this shot of her with my cell phone just before she disappeared around the corner!
I hope someday I or someone will get a picture of her face; she's actually a cute kitty!

Yakima's Bicentennial Trolleys began operations in Yakima in October of 1974. They have been serving faithfully for the last 52 years without a major overhaul. The longest running of Yakima's original trolleys in the early days ran only 37 years. These 8mm movies were first posted on AirailImages and are used with permission. Check out AirailImages for interesting videos of trains and aircraft.

Seattle has been touting their new Rapid Transit line that goes across Lake Washington on the floating bridge as the only one of its kind in the world. Well Yakima has something rare too! We call it Rabbit Transit!!πŸ˜†

Vintage Yakima Trolley Movies from 1974-1975. The Selah line was popular right from the start in 1974 when the trolleys from Porto, Portugal arrived. Selah Gap has rare scenic and historic attractions that make it the crown jewel of our line. Everyone loves to ride to Selah on the trolley, perched along a narrow cliff, overlooking the Yakima River, and gliding past the ruins of a rock crushing plant that was established here in 1911 using convict labor from the Walla Walla Penitentiary.
The second portion of the movie shows one of the trolleys being towed back to the carbarn by the other trolley after it became disabled at the motorman's platform while on the Henrybro line.

Many thanks to all our young friends who came to visit with the Easter Bunny on Friday and Saturday! Our rides were a sellout!! And we even added an extra run on Saturday!

And many thanks to Maria and Pattie and David and Dick and Doug and Jim and Ryan and Russ who made it all possible!! You guys made a great team!!!

In less than two months our operating season will open! We are hoping to have an additional trolley operating by then. In the meantime, we need to clean the track along 6th Avenue for some special runs we are planning this summer. We need volunteers to help!!! If you would like to volunteer, please send your contact information to [email protected]. We will notify you when the cleaning crews are needed.

We feel very blessed to have so many friends in the Yakima public who support our rides as well as just giving us a friendly smile and wave when you pass our trolley on the street! You give us the incentive to keep working to save this historic railroad from being lost!

For this summer we are planning some different kinds of special runs than we have ever had before and we think you will like them! Stay tuned and we will announce them right here a little later on!
