The FAA just issued a notice about 3D-printed cockpit parts sold under the name MadeByMike3D for Bonanza, Debonair and Grumman aircraft. Cup holders, headset holders, windshield shades, yoke grips and instrument panel inserts, all installed without approval between 2024 and 2025.

A 3D-printed cup holder does not change how the airplane flies. But it does change whether the aircraft still conforms to its approved design, and that question follows the airplane through every future annual and every future pre-buy.

If you own one of these aircraft, the FAA wants you to check for these parts, pull anything found in inventory, and report anything already installed.

A 21-year-old flight instructor safely landed a Piper PA-28 Cherokee on Interstate 10 in Pensacola Florida after the aircraft suffered an engine failure during a student’s very first flying lesson.

Emily Shelton said she first noticed oil fumes in the cockpit before the aircraft’s oil pressure rapidly dropped. Realising they would not make it back to the airport, she took control from her student and radioed ATC:

“We’re not making the airport. We’re going down on I-10.”

Shelton then glided the aircraft beneath an overhead highway sign and landed safely between moving vehicles. Neither she, her student nor anyone on the ground was injured.

The FAA is now investigating what caused the engine failure.

Saturday at the airfield. Washed the RV-10, then flew a few laps in the pattern to dry it off. Not a bad way to spend the day.
