I had the pleasure of driving here in St. Thomas and I didn’t know what I signed up for.
I am more than twice his age, so I didn’t know who he was. Other companies refused to drive him, but I’m happy I did.
I understand streaming from a friend of mine however it still doesn’t appeal me or posting everything I do on social media. However I’ve seen so many posts lately, and a lot of elder people like myself don’t understand, I would like to break it down.
The internet and streaming is something we we will not understand. I saw children and parents running in the streets for their viral moment. I saw children that looked like they were going to faint. Just like our generation did for Micheal Jackson. I didn't understand it. However, I knew I've seen the behavior before.
What most didn’t see is how kind and nurturing he was to the children. He motivated them. He was doing 10 things at the same time, and he still noticed the children that ran from destination to destination. It felt like a scavenger hunt. He would pause and ask them, “Why did you do that?” As he seemed deeply concerned.
He was streaming, doing what his team had planned for him to do. He answered people on his livestream chats while speaking to these dear wonderful children that we have here in the VI.
All of a sudden, it hit me. He is kind, nurturing, and knew exactly what to say to make them feel seen. I can only look at him as a son — someone’s son. He had a vision, and his team made it happen every day on his tour.
I want to acknowledge his determination because that’s what I saw as a 21 year old. Making a difference we may never understand, but it inspires your children or grandchildren. He spoke life into them, and I was happy to see that side of him.
One moment that stuck with me: a young boy, maybe 10, he asked him the population of St. Thomas, while he was live. He said 55k. I don’t think he was wrong. I believe that’s what he learned in school. In 1968, the population of STT was 55k. “Who’s smarter than a 5th grader” came to mind.
Safe journey, Speed. Rest when you need to. Be the blessing that you are to the youth!!
