Cambodia has a brutal recent history. Between 1975 and 1979, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge ruled the country with an extreme ideology that sought to remake society from zero by forcing everyone into a rigid rural collective, eliminating intellectuals, cities, and personal identity in the name of absolute equality.
An estimated 3 million people died or were murdered—the sick and the healthy, the young and the old, men, women, and even babies. People could be killed for wearing glasses or simply for having “soft hands.”
In Phnom Penh, we visited the former S-21 prison, a place of systematic torture.
Outside the city, we also visited one of the killing fields. There, we saw the tree where babies were killed by having their heads smashed against it. Hard to comprehend—but true. 🕊️
We were deeply shaken. And especially with everything happening in the world right now, it feels vital to remember what humanity is capable of—and to actively work against it. 🌍
Honor to the victims of Cambodia, and to the millions of others worldwide who have suffered similar crimes. 🙏
