We did a quick day trip to Bruges earlier in the week before it got hot. Cute town and very popular. We went into the smallest Basilica I’ve ever seen to see the holy blood relic- a clothe with Jesus’s blood, Basilica of the Holy Blood. It was very pretty inside.

Ghent and the surrounding area of Flanders is very flat. We rented basic e-bikes for our month to get out and explore. Plenty of castles and estates to see in and around the city.

We’ve wrapped up our week in Lille, France. Another incredibly cute city. Very manageable by bike, metro and walking. We managed to get take a train to Dunkirk for the day, visit the 1940 museum and take a history walking tour that also included movie scenes. If you haven’t seen the movie you should. I also learned that by the time of the armistice in June 1940 Germans had captured over 1 million French soldiers as POW’s many which remained in camps until the end of World War II. Plenty of beautiful museums and churches to see.

Metz, France was such a surprise. We found a bit of California in the botanical garden. We found everything we were looking for. We walked and walked, found art, an old fort and beautiful old churches. The stained glass is the oldest in Metz from the 1200’s. Metz was the stained glass production capital for France during the Renaissance. We rented e bikes to ride out along the Mosselle River to see the old Roman aqueduct from around year 200. Many free places to visit and the free city museum incorporate into its walls the original Roman baths. The contemporary art museum was well worth the visit and admission cost.

Hello from Metz. We are here for a week. So many big, beautiful churches. This is the biggest St. Etienne Cathedral. It boasts the largest expanse of stained glass windows with more than 70,000 square feet of glass most dating back to the renaissance. Watch the video. It was completed in 1520 after almost 300 years of construction.

We needed to change up our plans for our first bike ride in St. Germaine En Laye because it was unavailable, so a quick look at the local tram route and off we went to Versailles. We came from the backside into the park- it was free and walked 1.5 miles through the forest and grand canal to the formal gardens. We’ve been in the gardens and palace two years ago so we did not buy a ticket. Had a nice lunch, sat and watched the rowers and headed back.

We’ve made two day trips into Paris. The first on Bastille Day and even though we were far from the crowds we saw the airshow and a few of the military units. Our goal was ultimately the D’Orsay museum to see old friends. The museum specializes in art from 1848 to 1914. Post revolution. Our second trip into Paris included the Notre Dame cathedral and the Cluny museum. Restoration of the cathedral is ongoing and it’s beautiful. The Cluny museum holds collections from the middle ages including the 6 tapestries of the Lady and the Unicorn from around 1500.
