Egg coffee at Giang Cafe.
Giang Cafe was located at number 39, Nguyen Huu Huan street in Ha Noi Old Quarter. I did some research and learned that the shop itself had a long history. The egg coffee was first made in 1946, by Nguyen Van Giang who was originally a barista at the Sofitel Legend Hotel at the time.
Giang Cafe had a small entrance, squeezed in between 2 buildings and surprisingly led to a very spacious shop and I was indeed lucky to have a seat at the balcony. It’s indeed a very typical local cafe with low wooden stools and tables. They used a warm tone paint which instantly made me feel comfortable and cozy. Their menu showed both Vietnamese and English (just like most shops in Ha Noi OQ), I ordered a hot Egg coffee and shortly after that, the staff came with my drink. It was served in a small cup with Vietnamese coffee at the bottom and golden, creamy egg cream on top. They even gave me a small heater (which was a candle under of a ceramic coffee heater) to make sure that the drink was always at the best temperature. When I took the first sip, I was like “Oh wow, there is no after taste of raw egg, what kind of dark magic is this!?” The foam was so thick and extra creamy, meanwhile the coffee at the bottom was strong and hot. A must-do thing in Ha Noi it was.

Is it safe to solo-travel in Vietnam?

I have had this question for the longest time and have been asking around but seems like I can’t find a good answer for it. So I figured that I would find out on my own.

My trip started on March 13th 2024 in Ha Noi. I’ve been in Ha Noi before so I kinda had better ideas about what I wanted to do. Water puppetry show, egg coffee, coconut coffee, bun cha and pho!!! I’m gonna describe everything very detailed.
For the water puppetry show, I booked my ticket on Traveloka for a hassle-free experience and it costed me 30.000vnd (~$1.18) extra for that. I just needed to go to an address that they gave me on traveloka app, showed them my booking, picked up my ticket and went to the theater, showed staffs my ticket and went inside, meanwhile people who bought the tickets at the theater had to wait in a long line. The show was indeed very unique and lots of fun. They used these wooden puppets to tell Vietnamese folklore, using traditional music (live, was performed by musicians). The best part was that they had headphones and you could choose in the list of languages they had available. There was a coffee shop nearby the theater, after the show I went to try out their egg coffee. It was a very delicious drink… (to be continued)
(Photo: google, because I wasn't allowed to take photos during the time the show was on display)
